Joseph Didace Cormier

Age 61, St. Joseph du Moine passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Didace was the son to the late James (Jimmy) and the late Zabine (Doucet) Cormier.

“Menoncle Didace” left home in 1979 to pursue a career in construction, beginning in Calgary, then moving on to Halifax, Bermuda, and Tennessee before settling just up the road from his roots in Terre Noire. Those years away didn’t stop him from being a frequent visitor to his siblings, nieces, nephews, and his buddies growing up. He enjoyed the simple but finer things in life, including fishing, playing cribbage, spending time with friends and family, and having “take-outs” from his sisters. Didace was a “do-drop-in”, always ready with a Coors Light in hand a story to tell, which many would agree was one of his greatest talents. After retiring to the beautiful McGarry Road, Didace kept himself busy with woodworking projects, gardening, and the odd beer with his friends and family. Although the years of drywalling took a toll on his shoulders and back, he refused to stay put, and took on jobs at the fish plant and later the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Didace will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. For the visits, the card games, the beers and the stories. We know that there will be a piece of Memere’s meat pie waiting for him.

Didace is survived by his brothers, Willie Joe, Huntington, Quebec, and John Louis (Lisette) Terre Noire; sisters, Marie Sophie (Réné) LeBlanc, Cap le Moine, Cecile Poirier, Plateau, and Jeanette (Lawrence) Cameron, Terre Noire; nephews and nieces, Denyse (Andy) Sanchez and their children Alex and Evelyn, Bruce (Shelley) Poirier and son Christopher, Lisa (Phillip) Timmons and son Jackson, Noelle Cormier (Godchild), Douglas Cameron (Kaitlyn), and Rose Cameron (Challion).

Besides his parents, Didace was predeceased by brother-in-law, Daniel Poirier.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral mass, but all are welcome to join us for a Celebration of Life at the Belle Cote Community Centre in honor of Didace on Friday, November 25, 2022 from 3-7 pm.

Burial will be held on Saturday in St. Michael’s Cemetery, East Margaree for family and close friends with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Patient Fund.
