Phillip Poirier

Age 65, Chéticamp. Phillip was born on December 1st, 1953 and raised in Chéticamp. He died peacefully on July 12, 2019 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp after a short battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Felix and the late Marie (Roach) Poirier. He was predeceased by brother Leo and sister Marie.

Phillip was known by many from all over Cape Breton Island and beyond. He was an avid sports fan and was the #1 Minor Hockey pool seller for over 30 years. Many children were able to play hockey because of Phillip’s fundraising efforts for Trail Minor hockey. Phillip leaves no immediate family but does have a whole community mourning his passing. He was special to everyone. He leaves behind special friends and family, Billy, Brenda Lee, Corey, Ashley and family, the entire staff at Le Gabriel Restaurant/Bar; Laurette, Donat and family; staff and management at Doryman Pub & Grill, Mr. Chicken, Your Dollar Store with More and especially Alfred Arthur who always made sure Phillip’s worm selling business was well taken care of, Restaurant Évangeline, Le P’tit Chady, Le Club Kinsmen de Chéticamp and his “marraine” Adrienne Desveau. He will be greatly missed by Marc, Lyne, Brooke, MacKenzie and Marcus Larade. He will be welcomed with open arms by family and special friend, Yvon.

Special thank-you to nurses, doctors, continuing care, and palliative care at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre. Phillip you have left a mark on our hearts and you will never be forgotten. No visitation. Photos will be displayed at back of church one hour before funeral mass which will be celebrated on Thursday, July 25th at 10:30 a.m. in Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp, with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. All are welcome to a light lunch and slideshow presentation at the Cabot Trail Arena following funeral mass. I will definitely miss his welcoming smile and hugs and the attempt to lay a big kiss. Always watched for him whether it be crab season or hockey season he was sure to make a presence. I think I’ve know him since I was 16 and even though we couldn’t communicate well our friendship grew the evening I bought him a beer and we had a dance at Le Gabriel. RIP my friend you will never be forgotten ♥️

I have been travelling to Cheticamp for over a decade now & it didn’t take me long to get to know Phillip & I quickly learned that you had to have at least a toonie in your pocket before you got to Cheticamp because as soon as he seen you , you were buying a minor hockey ticket . I looked forward to running in to Phillip & have him put his hand out , I would pass him my toonie & he would give me my ticket to fill out . I will miss sitting & having a meal with him while he poked fun at the Habs & I poked fun at the leafs . My trips to Cheticamp will never be the same & driving up & down the main road without seeing him will be tough . Rest easy my friend !! , …… until we meet again …. i’ll try to have my toonie on me when I get up there with you .

Phillipe was the first person to welcome us to Chéticamp with such a large smile and friendly attitude. Every time he came to the coop, he made sure to come and see me wherever i was working. He was a great ambassador for Chéticamp! I will miss his smile…
