Walter “Wally” Hinkley

Walter “Wally” Hinkley, a beloved member of our community, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the age of 75. Wally was a son to the late Manuel Walter and the late Edna Mary (Moore) Hinkley. Wally was known for his unwavering spirit, generous heart, and a life filled with rich experiences and deep connections.

Born on December 7, 1948, Wally grew up with the land and sea as his companions. From a young age, he embraced the challenges and rewards of farming, dedicating decades to cultivating his family’s farm with the same care and passion that he brought to every aspect of his life. His work ethic and commitment were matched only by his love for the ocean, where he spent many years lobster fishing. The early mornings and salt-kissed air were a testament to his resilience and his profound connection to nature.

Wally’s love for the land extended beyond his work. He was an avid gardener, transforming his backyard into a lush haven that was admired by all who visited. His green thumb produced vegetables and flowers that were as vibrant as his personality, and he took great joy in sharing his harvest with friends and family.

An enthusiastic card player, Wally hosted many crib games, where his strategic mind and playful banter made him a favorite among friends. The camaraderie and laughter he shared with his card-playing circle were as cherished as the games themselves.

Family was the cornerstone of Wally’s life. He is survived by his children, Nicole (Megan), Catherine (Riley), Alysha (Ronnie), Clarence “Digger” (Christine), and Sharlene; his grandchildren, Sierra (Justin), Makenna, Brady, Madison, Calee, Breanna (Gordon), Paige, Connor, Dawson, Cole and Blair-Marie; his great-grandchildren, Ariah, Ava, Quintin and Hazel; his sisters, Nora (Stan), Carol, Catherine (Robert), and Madeline.

Wally is predeceased by his soulmate, Elizabeth “Liz”; brother, Donnie; sister, Elsie; and great-granddaughter, Adalynn.

Wally’s love for his family was evident in everything he did, from the lessons he taught them about hard work and respect to the simple joys of spending time together.

Wally’s many friends remember him for his kindness, his quick wit, and his unwavering loyalty. His legacy is one of generosity and deep-rooted connections to both the land and the people he loved.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024 at Cheticamp Funeral Home from 7-9 pm. A memorial service celebrating Wally’s remarkable life will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church, Pleasant Bay with Rev. Peter Rioux officiating. Burial to follow in the Pleasant Bay Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre.

Wally Hinkley will be remembered for his enduring spirit, his love of nature, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth and wisdom. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
