Henrietta (Harriet) Marie AuCoin

Henrietta (Harriet) Marie AuCoin

With deep sadness the family announces that Henrietta (Harriet) Marie AuCoin (86), Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp, formerly of Belle Cote, Inverness County, passed away peacefully on 17 August 2020. Born on 26 December, 1933 in Margaree Harbour, and raised in Terre Noire, she was the daughter of the late George and Marie (Leblanc) AuCoin.  She was a long serving member of St Michael’s Church, East Margaree, and most recently of L’Église St Pierre, Cheticamp. She is survived by her six children – Allan (Elizabeth Dean), Gibsons BC; Richard (Denise Murrin), Lethbridge AB; Gordon (Kim Sutton), Ottawa ON; Priscilla (John Martin), Stoney Creek ON; Maurice (Chantal Pitre) Westmount QC; and Harold (Lynn Chiasson) Timberlea NS; sixteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren; sisters Honora (Nora) Considine, Dartmouth, NS; Sister Anne, Antigonish, NS; and brothers Arthur, East Margaree, NS; Wilfred, Edmonton AB, and Theodore, St Joseph de Moine, NS.

She was predeceased by her soul mate and most beloved husband of 44 years Joseph AuCoin (1999); brothers George, John, and Jerome (Jerry); and son-in-law John Martin.

Well known for her very social and engaging personality, Harriet loved hosting visitors. The tea pot was always on, and at meal time there was always room for more at the table. She was gifted with an amazing ability to make everyone feel at ease and at home. A deeply devoted wife and nurturing mother, above all else, Harriet dearly loved her family, and always placed their needs above her own. Her infectious laugh, her quick wit, and generous heart will be missed dearly by all who were blessed to have known her.

The family would like to extend their sincerest heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Foyer Père Fiset and the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre for their unwavering care, kindness, and compassion. During these challenging times of COVID-19 when we could not be with her in person, your communication, support, and companionship were well above and beyond what could be expected.

Cremation has taken place, with burial in St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held after COVID-19 travel and gathering restrictions are lifted.

Memorial donations may be made to Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home or a charity of your choice.

    Dear Cousins,

Thinking of you all. Remembering the gift your mother had for welcoming and feeding the many cousins who appeared in her kitchen. She was known for producing those bountiful luncheons at a moments notice.

    Keeping you in our thoughts.

Deeply saddened to hear that we lost one of the most amazing women of my lifetime. She was like a mother to me growing up. I learned so much about parenting and challenging your children to be the best they could be. Lessons I instilled in my own kids when I was lucky enough to have a family of my own. Her energy was limitless, her directness was inspiring and her laugh was infectious. She made the best poached salmon and white egg sauce ever. I’ve tried to replicate it many time but could never get it like Harriett’s.
Her home was open to everyone. I was so excited to visit her in Cheticamp a few years back. She hadn’t changed a bit and the topic of conversation quickly turned to politics; something she was passionate about. She was infinitely proud of her children (and rightly so) but wanted to know all about mine.
I’ve thought of her often, especially after losing my own mother not long ago. They were dear friends, coming from the same place in Cape Breton and I know they’re sharing their love for one another once again.
    I’ll miss her dearly.
Heartfelt condolences to all of her family

Harriet was a best friend to our family. We are so sorry for your loss. So many loving memories will flood your minds now and in the coming days and years. She had a wonderful life with Joseph, and was so proud of all of your accomplishments, and for the grandchildren and great grandkids. Her siblings always visited Harriet for the news, tea, lunches, and card games, etc. She had a sound faith throughout the good times and the bad.
May she rest in peace, and may you be comforted in your grief.

  • Paulette Larade August 19, 2020 7:28 am

Sincere condolences to her whole family which she adored.
I always loved visiting Harriet on a weekly basis when she was home to help with her meds. We had a few laughs and I loved hearing all the stories of when her children were younger. One of them I remember was when she expected 1 son home with maybe 2 friends but instead got 2 carloads. I’m sure she fed those guys like kings. Cherish the memories..
