Marcelle Chiasson

Marcelle Chiasson

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marcelle at the age of 81 years. Marcelle was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully at home in Dartmouth on June 9th, 2021.

Marcelle is survived by Lawrence, her husband of 56 years as well as their two daughters, Michèle and Ann (Randy Brushett). Her five grandchildren will miss their “grandmaman” deeply; Cynthia, Mia, Anita Brushett, Isaac and Gabrielle McNeil (Scott McNeil).

Marcelle was the eldest of 14 siblings and had a close relationship with her brothers and sisters, despite the distance that separated them. She is survived by sisters, Pauline (Alain), Francine, Marguerite (Germain), Brigitte (Nicol), Christiane (Guy), Marielle (Marcel)  and Jacynthe as well as brothers, Fernand (Madeleine) and Camil (Francine). She was predeceased by her parents Jeanette and Gaudias Tardif as well as siblings Carmen, Simone, Félix, and Jacques. Marcelle was an exceptional aunt to her many nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed by them.

The Chiasson family adored Marcelle. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Pauline (Joe McKinnon), Denise Gilot and Margaret Anderson as well as brother-in-law Bernard Levert. She was predeceased by many sisters and brothers-in-law with whom she enjoyed spending time with on “La butte à Mosie” in Margaree Forks. Marcelle was a matriarch of the Chiasson family, always welcoming her many nieces and nephews and other family members from near and far for a homemade meal and great conversation.

Marcelle was a risk taker, as evidenced by her willingness to date (and eventually marry) an English speaking Acadian from Cape Breton and travel there from the town of Chibougamau in Quebec to meet his family! The language and cultural differences would have been major obstacles to most, but not for Marcelle! She embraced this adventure and built close, loving relationships with her Chiasson in-laws. Marcelle spent many summers on La butte à Mosie preparing meals for the farmers and random visitors, always doing so with a happy heart and without a word of complaint. To say that she was adaptable and easy-going would be a huge understatement. Marcelle was calm, cool and collected. She was a high school French teacher for most of her teaching career and was gifted at getting even the rowdiest, uninterested teenagers engaged in their learning. She was always the voice of wisdom, though she never got in your face about it. Marcelle let her family and friends make their mistakes and was always there to help them pick up the pieces after the fact. She was a devoted and loving wife to Lawrence, sharing a love of reading, travel, skiing, snow-mobiling, hunting and fishing. She was a patient encourager, always ready to proof-read Lawrence’s writing and help him meet his professional and personal goals. She was selfless, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was an excellent cook and excelled at hosting friends and family while providing an extraordinary culinary experience each time! Her graciousness, elegance and intelligence were unmatched; Marcelle succeeded in working full time, taking university courses, raising her daughters, running a household, and maintaining friendships and family relationships without missing a beat. Marcelle was a wonderful mother to Michèle and Ann, always going out of her way to provide awesome experiences and meet every need. She was always there for her girls and traveled time and time again to visit them before the family was reunited in Nova Scotia nine years ago. She was a warm and loving mother-in-law to Randy and Scott. Marcelle found her niche when she became a grandma. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her five grandchildren: walks to the park, shopping trips, playing pretend, cooking their favorite things, lending her car, greeting them after school, taking them to the camp at Lac Beauséjour…the list is endless. Marcelle loved deeply and was deeply loved, leaving all who knew her with many beautiful memories.

A celebration of Marcelle’s life will be held in Margaree Forks in late July or August, Covid restrictions permitting. In lieu of flowers, donations to Operation Smile would be most appreciated.

    Good Morning Lawrence,

I just read the obituary of your wife Marcelle in today’s “The Chronicle Herald.”

Rosemarie and I express our condolences to you and to all your family members, especially Michele and Ann. We are disappointed that we did not have the opportunity to meet with you, Marcelle, and other family members at “La Butte a Mosie” in Margaree Forks.

From my conversations with you, you seemed to have been prepared for Marcelle’s death. Nevertheless, there is now a large void in you life after 56 years of married life. May you find comfort and peace from your family and friends at this time.

I will call you later today and maybe we can meet in Cape Breton in July.

    Exressions of Peace to ALL!

    Burton
