It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Alphonse Larade, age 69 of Cheticamp, on Friday, May 20th, 2022, at the Saint John Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Alphonse served 26 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and was extremely proud of his career. Although he originally joined the Royal 22nd Regiment (Vandoos), his passion was clearly serving with the Canadian Airborne Regiment where he served most of his career and, where he logged over 300 jumps. Throughout his successful career, he deployed on countless missions spanning all world continents and was stationed and served in locations in all parts of Canada. While in the military, his second passion was playing hockey although he spent an inordinate amount of ice time in the penalty box. While not deployed or on exercises, he enjoyed coaching minor hockey and ball. While home during the winter months, he could be seen building a back yard rink for the neighbourhood kids to skate, play hockey or to just hang out.
Upon his retirement, he focused on living life to the fullest. Enjoying his winters in Florida with his wife of 48 years, they also engaged in their retirement passion and focus, cruising. Florida also permitted them the opportunity to enjoy their winter friends and golf. His summers in Cheticamp were spent with friends, mainly on the golf course. He particularly loved the comradery that was part of the Golf Club’s Men’s Night.
Alphonse always saw the best in people and believed that everyone needed a chance to do better. His kindness and compassion touched everyone and he will be fondly remembered by all who ever met him.
His love of family was evident in all that he did and, their well-being was clearly his priority. In addition to loving his wife Adele, he was also extremely proud of his children Tim (Shawna) and Melanie as well as his five beautiful grandchildren, Lulu, Hannah, Khloe, Isabella and Leila whom he loved to the moon and back. It was clear that he loved his life and focused his attention and energy on ensuring that his high school sweetheart, Adele was always happy.
He is survived by his wife Adele, his children Tim and Melanie, his siblings Therese, Yvonne, Isabelle, Marie-Helene and Georgette, Gordon, Claude and Gerard. He was predeceased by his mother, Beatrice (Poirier) and his father (Leo T. Larade) and his siblings, Marie-Cecile, Eveline, Robert and Joseph.
Alphonse was a loving and dedicated husband, father and soldier. He was a good man who will be missed by many in Cheticamp and throughout the Airborne Regiment and the military.
Visitation will be at the Cheticamp Funeral Home from 6-9 PM on Thursday, July 7, 2022 with funeral mass at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 8, 2022 at St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp, followed by a reception at the Cheticamp Legion.
Memorial donations can be made to Papa Noël at the Cheticamp Acadian Credit Union or via etransfer at [email protected]
