  • Marie Rita Chiasson

    Marie Rita Chiasson

    91, of Chéticamp –  Rita passed away peacefully, surrounded by her large family, on June 26, 2025 at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp. Rita was a daughter to the late John and the late Susanne (LeBlanc) Poirier.

    Rita was the baby of 10 children. She started working at Sacred Heart Hospital at the age of 16, where she worked in the laundry and kitchen departments. She married the love of her life, Wilfred, at age 19. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and lots of dancing! ….lasting 52 years. She had one daughter, Mariette, and one grandson, Lucas, who became her greatest pride.

    Rita was a people loving person. She loved a good gathering, a good story telling session, and was happy wherever there was dancing or music. Being fun loving, she was part of the bowling league for many years, where she made friends of all ages. She was a member of the Chéticamp Seniors’ Club, Dames Auxiliares, and Dames de Ste-Anne.

    From her beloved Petit Etang, she moved and lived at La Résidence Acadienne for 20 years with many supportive friends. For the last year, she was a resident at Foyer Père Fiset, where she received great care. She was spoiled by the attention of her numerous nieces, with special mention to Yolande and Gisèle; always on the ready!

    Many thanks to Dr. Amélie Maillet for the years of professional and personal care; the staff of Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, and the staff of Foyer Père Fiset. The Cheticamp community is a special place, and Rita and her entire family benefitted greatly.

    Rita is survived by her daughter, Mariette Chiasson (Jean-Gilles Poirier); brother, Méderic Poirier (Marie Antoinette); sister, Sr. Virginie Poirier f.d.j.; and grandson, Lucas Poirier (Allison Carter).

    Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Chiasson; brothers, Henri Poirier (Marie Cecile), and Hubert Poirier (Rhéa); sisters, Tarzile AuCoin (Henri), Marie-Joséphine Chiasson (Louis), Marie-Hèlene Poirier f.d.j., Henriette Anne Chiasson ( Joseph), and Marguerite Esther Poirier f.d.j.

    Rita will be resting at the Cheticamp Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 from 7-8 pm. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 10:30 am in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine with Deacon Gérald LeBlanc officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp.

    Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

  • “Alice” Georgina (Fraser) Clarke

    “Alice” Georgina (Fraser) Clarke

    Alice passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton, ON, on June 8th, 2025 at the age of 84. Daughter of the late Donald and the late Elizabeth Fraser (Bessie MacLellan); loving mother of Lisa Clarke, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, and Michele Clarke (Dale Adams),Stoney Creek, ON. Alice is survived by her former husband, Harry Clark Jr., the father of Lisa and Michele; proud grandmother of Clark Adams and Georgia Adams; dear sister, to Jessie Fraser (late Al), Sylvia Hurley (late John), the late Kay Ingram (late Pat), late Diane Canonaco (late Joe), the late Pauline Killeen (late Dave), late D.A. Fraser (Eleanor), and late Patrick (late Suzanne).

    Alice will be fondly remembered by all who knew her for her kind heart, enthusiasm and love of life, music and dancing. She taught grade 5 and French for over 30 years in Sydney Mines, NS.  Her students were also her children; ensuring their education and her instruction was top notch in helping to shape their future.  The well-being of her community was of paramount importance and she was an active volunteer throughout her life.  Her family and friends will remember Alice as a kind and gentle soul and for her listening ear and advice that made her a confidant to many.  Alice touched all of our lives deeply and our memories with her are truly a blessing. She is now resting in Peace.

    Upon retirement Alice moved to Ontario to live and be closer to her immediate family where she lived the final years of her life and continued to make many more friends and a lasting impact on her community.  A special thank-you to the nurses and doctors at St. Peter’s Hospital – Hamilton Health Sciences for their compassionate and dedicated care of Alice.

    Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 am at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp, Nova Scotia on Friday, June 20, 2025.  In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.

  • Jeannette Thérèse Doucet

    Jeannette Thérèse Doucet

    Age 62, of Cheticamp passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. She was the daughter of the late Alphonse Simon and the late Annette (Muise) Bourgeois.

    Jeannette was of very quiet nature. She worked at the Foyer Père Fiset before retiring after 17 years of service, and then last worked at the Cheticamp Co-op. She also worked as a waitress for many years in several local restaurants. Her two grandchildren, Brielle and Tyrel were her pride and joy.

    Jeannette is survived by her husband, Kevin Doucet; her daughter, Annette Doucet; brother, Alex (Joanne) Bourgeois; grandchildren, Brielle and Tyrel Munian; mother-in-law, Marie Stella Doucet; sister-in-law, Darlene Doucet; and her nieces, Ashley and Skylar.

    Besides her parents, Jeannette was predeceased by her father-in-law, Raymond Doucet; and brother-in-law, Wendell Doucet.

    Funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at 10:30 am in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine with Deacon Gerald LeBlanc officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or La Coopérative de Transport de Chéticamp (l’Acabie).

  • Amelia Roach

    Amelia Roach

    Age 89, of Cheticamp, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2025 at the Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp with her family by her side. She was a daughter of the late Pitre and the late Helene (Aucoin) Poirier.

    She was a devoted mom, grandmother to Glen and dear friend to many. She enjoyed fiddle tunes, country music, dancing, a good game of cards, watching Montreal hockey games, home parties, and “la mi-carême.” In other words, mom was happy being surrounded by lots of people.

    She worked in various cleaning jobs and at Aucoin’s Bakery for many years.

    She is survived by her daughters, Corinne Doucette (Eric), Paula Larade (Rene), and Della Roach, all of Cheticamp; brother, David Poirier (Hilda), Cheticamp; grandson, Glen Larade, Halifax.

    Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Paul Roach; brothers, Hubert, Xavier, Alex Joe, Arthur, Anselm Alphonse, Wilfred, and Semi John; sisters, Elizabeth, Marie Flora, Annie Belle, Helene Rose, Marie Eunice, Olive, Marie Edna, and Marie.

    Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 12, 2025 at 11:00 am in St. Joseph’ Church, St. Joseph du Moine with Father Daniel Muskaray officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp. Memorial donations may be made to Foyer Père Fiset.

    Joseph George “Georgie” Larade

    Age 82, Cheticamp passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at  Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Georgie was a son to the late William and the late Nellé (Haché) Larade.

    Georgie moved back to Cheticamp 15 years ago to marry the love of his life, Laurette. He was a big bingo fan and loved playing cards. He enjoyed gardening and he decorated outside for every holiday. He had a sweet tooth for Laurette’s baking. He will be missed by his family and friends, and especially his wife, Laurette.

    Besides his wife, Laurette, Georgie is survived by his son, Stanley (Danika) Larade; step daughters, Lucie Roach, Lucille Deveau, Charlene Deveau and Ann Deveau; brothers, Simon Pierre (Linda) Larade, Louis Joseph (Jeanne) Larade, and Patrick (Pauline) Larade; sister in law, Rose Larade; grandchildren, Noah Larade, and Nathan Larade; great grandchildren, Nico Larade, Kayce Larade, Nolan Larade, and Ethan Gallant.

    Georgie was predeceased by his son, Ricky Larade; and brothers, Pierre Cyril Larade, Leo Larade, and Willie Joe Larade.

    By family request, there will be no funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

    Anna Marie (Smith) Camus

    Age 88, Cheticamp

    It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anna Marie (Smith) Camus on May 1, 2025.  Born on December 5, 1937 in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia. Anna was a loving sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was known for her charismatic personality.

    She will be deeply missed by her sons, Chris, Brad and Glen; her daughter, Danielle; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

    A graveside service and burial will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp on Friday, May 9, 2025 at 10:30am.

  • Alice Swords

    Alice Swords

    Age 91, Cheticamp passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025 in the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Alice was a daughter to the late Alfred and the late Annie (Phillips) Ingraham.

    Mom grew up in Belle Cote. She later moved to Halifax, where she worked at Government House. She met dad, who was in the Navy, and they married shortly after. They later moved to Ontario, where she worked as a Health Care Aid for 15 years. She moved back to Cape Breton at the age of 80, and her and dad spent their days playing Phase 10, going to the Casino, and playing bingo.

    Our family would like to thank all the wonderful nurses at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, and Dr. Michel Chiasson, for being so caring and compassionate with Mom.

    Alice is survived by her daughters, Geraldine Mans (John), and Dianna Chalmers (Robert); sister, Della Jefferson; grandchildren, Jennifer, Bradley, Nicole, and Christopher; great grandchildren, Travis, Hunter, Hailey, Hudson, and Hayden.

    Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Swords; great grandchild, Hope; brothers, Reuben, James, Bevis, Alexander, and Fuller; and sisters, Laura, Ella, Margaret, and Doris.

    A graveside service and burial will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 1 PM in the Whale Cove Cemetery, Margaree Harbour with Rev. Alicia Cox officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp.

  • Donald Burns MacCallum

    Donald Burns MacCallum

    It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the death of Donald Burns MacCallum, which occurred on Saturday, April 12,2025. Don was born in Halifax on January 6,1940 and later lived in Sydney where he received his early education at Sydney Academy. He later joined the Air Force and when discharged moved to Montreal with the love of his life, Camelle (Chiasson). Upon their retirement they moved to Margaree Valley to be closer to family.

    Don is survived by his son, Darren (Kathy); two grandsons, Kyle (Kristen) and Ryan (Chelsea), Montreal; two sisters, Sharon (Bill), and Elsie (Will), Lunenburg; a brother, Gordon (Cecilia), Manitoba; and his best friend, his dog, Levi.

    The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Don’s many friends in Margaree and Cheticamp who assisted him. Special thanks to his dear friends, Steve and Raylene who helped and cared for him during his illness. Cremation has taken place. There will be no service by request. Donations can be made to Hope for Wildlife.

  • Père Pierre-Antoine St-Cyr

    Père Pierre-Antoine St-Cyr

    It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of père Pierre-Antoine St-Cyr, C.S.C., who was called to his eternal rest on April 1, 2025.

    Père St-Cyr served the parishes of Saint-Joseph, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine and Saint-Pierre, Chéticamp with unwavering faith, kindness and dedication since July 2019.

    Born on May 7, 1967 in Port-à-Piment, Haiti, Père Pierre-Antoine St-Cyr, responded to the Lord’s call by embracing religious life in the Congregation of Sainte-Croix. Entering the Congregation’s novitiate in September 1989, he made his first religious profession on August 26, 1990, marking the beginning of a life dedicated to God and the service of his people. Driven by a desire to deepen his knowledge, he continued his studies in Thomistic philosophy at the Grand Séminaire Notre-Dame d’Haïti in Cazeau.

    He completed a post-philosophical internship at Pilate in 1992-1993, where he immersed himself fully in community life and parish service. This enriching experience was followed by his theological studies at the Grand Séminaire Notre-Dame d’Haïti in Turgeau from 1993 to 1997. On November 30, 1997, he sealed his definitive commitment to the Congregation of Sainte-Croix with the profession of perpetual vows. A year later, on August 9, 1998, he was ordained a priest.

    Père Pierre-Antoine St-Cyr leaves behind a precious legacy of faith, service and dedication. His ministry was marked by a deep love of the Church and an ardent desire to see every baptized person grow in the knowledge and love of Christ.

    Père St-Cyr is survived by his sister Flore St-Cyr, his brother Jean-Luc Damas and all those who had the privilege of walking with him in faith and mission.

    A prayer vigil will be held on Thursday evening, April 24, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Église Saint-Pierre, Chéticamp. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 25 at 10:30 a.m. also in Église Saint-Pierre. For those unable to attend in person, both will be livestreamed via Facebook.

    Velma Bourgeois

    Age 80, Cheticamp  passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp. She was a daughter of the late Denis and the late Minnie (Lefort) Aucoin.

    Velma loved to spend time in the kitchen, baking and cooking. She was a longtime bingo fan and liked to hook rugs. Her best love was the love she had for her granddaughters, Stacey and Mélanie. They were her greatest joy. She was a stay-at-home mom and worked managing the family business, E. Bourgeois Trucking Ltd. She will be missed by her family and many close friends.

    We would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Sacred Heart Communuty Health Centre and especially the staff of the Foyer Père Fiset.

    Velma is survived by her children, Claude (Shelley), and Jeanne; brother, Leonard (Zabeth); grandchildren, Stacey (Simon), Mélanie (Andrew), and Dylan; great grandchildren, Nico and Rémi.

    Besides her parents, Velma was predeceased by her husband, Emile; son, André; brothers, Alfred, Clifford, Eddie, Johnny, Bernie, Gordon; and sister, Therese.

    Visitation will take place on Monday, April 21, 2025 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp with Father Bill Burke officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
