  • Joseph Amédée Muise

    Joseph Amédée Muise

It is with profound sadness that the family of Joseph Amédée Muise announces his sudden passing at home on July 06, 2022, at the age of 68.  Joseph Amédée (Joe, Joey Bear, Pip) was born in 1953 in Chéticamp, NS, to the late Joseph Amédée Muise and the late Alice Camus.

With a solid work ethic, Joe started working at the age of 14 as a fisherman with his dad. He then went on to serve his community as Manager of the Cheticamp Arena where he worked for 10 years. From there, he made a life changing decision to partner with Marcel Larade and take over the Cheticamp Ambulance Service where he began a long career as a paramedic and eventually a supervisor with EMC, then EHS, serving various regions of Cape Breton Island and receiving a number of prestigious awards. During this time, he supported many families and made life-long friends that were still in his life even after retirement.

Joe was a leader who gave selflessly of himself to everyone he knew, especially his family and closest friends. From coaching sports teams, to mentoring new paramedics, to working tireless days and nights serving his community as a valued member of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre Charitable Foundation, as well as being involved in numerous other volunteer positions over the past several decades.

Most recently, Joe found fun and relaxation sharing a coffee and many laughs with his special group of friends or fishing off the wharf with his dearest fishing buddies, both old and young. Despite all these other roles, accomplishments and new hobbies, Joe’s greatest joy came from spending time with all the “kids” that came into his life over the years. He treated them all like his own and there’s nothing he wouldn’t have done to see each one of them smile and they all looked to him for guidance and advice as they grew older.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Marjolaine Muise; his stepson, Kenneth Chiasson (Leah); his sisters, Beatrice Romaniuk (Dmytro) and Yvette Muise; his grandchildren, Moira Clark (Greg) and Ainslee Chiasson. He is also survived by his in-laws, Lise Roach (Daniel), Nicholas Chiasson (Ginette), Gilberte Larade (Gelas), Jeanne Leblanc (André), Jeannine Chiasson, Jean Maurice Chiasson (Wanda), Marc Larade (Lyne); and 14 nieces and nephews.

His memory will live on in all those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be sadly missed and never forgotten by all his family and dearest friends.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date, to be determined by the family. Any donations can be made in Joe’s memory to the Sacred Heart Hospital Charitable Foundation.

  • Armand Joseph Poirier

    Armand Joseph Poirier

    December 12, 1957 – June 18, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Armand Joseph Poirier, age 64, at Foyer Père Fiset in Chéticamp on June 18th, 2022. Born in Chéticamp on December 12th, 1957, he was the son of the late Napoléon (à Nazaire) and the late Bernadette (Doucet) Poirier of Chéticamp.

It is very difficult to part with Armand, but it was even harder to see him struggle for years, deteriorating as a result of a very rare disease called “Cerebral Cavernoma”. We want to thank the staff of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre and the Highland Manor in Neil’s Harbour for the special care during his short stay before he became part of the family of Foyer Père Fiset in Chéticamp in November 2021. We are forever grateful for the exceptional care provided by the management and staff of Le Foyer, who went above and beyond to assure his safety and well-being. The compassion and kind gestures towards him and the family during his final journey among us, go beyond the call of duty and will never be forgotten.  Armand was treated with much dignity to his dying breath.

Armand graduated in June 1977 from Canso Regional Vocational School in Port Hawkesbury, certified as a welder. He began his career of 44 years which started at Gerry’s Welding & Machine Shop, for Gerard Boudreau. Eventually the business became Chéticamp Welding & Machine Shop. Armand loved his work and was very dedicated to the job and the numerous projects that came his way. He was a very reputable “welder” in the community and surrounding areas. He was known as a hard worker and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

As much as Armand loved his work, he had many other passions. In 1986, he acquired a diploma from the K&D School of Taxidermy. He was known for his patience and working relentlessly to get it done just right.

Armand was an avid outdoor sportsman. He spent many hours driving his 4-wheeler traveling in the mountains and spending time at a camp built by him, his father and siblings – la campe des Nazaires. He loved fishing, hunting, hiking, snowshoeing and the list goes on. He was also a great blueberry picker and loved arriving home with full containers.

Even though Armand was a bit of a loner and quiet, he was content to be surrounded by family and his close buddies. He was kind and of gentle nature. Although he had no children of his own, he considered Cory as his son. He was an amazing Dad and later in life, a proud Pépére to Damien and Dominic. They were his pride and joy. Like his father Napoléon, kids were drawn to Armand, and he could entertain them for hours.  It brought him so much joy to bring smiles on their faces. There was nothing Armand would not do for his family and friends.

Armand was a dedicated member of Recherche et Sauvetage Chéticamp Search & Rescue for 35 years. He took his role quite seriously, participated in many courses and searches, oversaw the annual ticket drive for many years and took deep pride in maintaining the hall. He made many life-long friends with this association.

This fine man will be dearly missed by his partner in life Rosie Grace, his stepson Cory, step-grandchildren, Damien and Dominic along with their mother Kayla Blackwood. He also leaves to mourn, his siblings; sister Geraldine (Stanley) Larade, brothers; Cyril (Charlene), Yvon (Tammie) of Chéticamp and Gilles (Bonnie) who resides in Camrose Alberta. Sister-in-law; Louise (Emile) Paturel of Belle-Côte and brother-in-law; Robert (Judy) Aucoin who reside in Digby, N.S. His special Oncle Lionel Poirier whom he loved like a father (Chéticamp) and his Uncle Patsy Poirier (Niagara Falls, Ontario). His aunts; Marie-Edna Aucoin, Leona Aucoin, Marie-Hélène LeBrun, Rita (Paul Joe) Deveau of Chéticamp and Josephine Fraser, Northeast Margaree. He will also be sadly missed by his numerous cousins, nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his in-laws, Gerard and Therese Aucoin. As well, several other extended family members.

We have no doubt that this gentle soul is now an angel watching over us and was welcomed to heaven with open arms, reunited with loved ones into the eternal peace of God’s kingdom where he is finally free from suffering.

Armand was a man of few words and seemed quite content with his life of simplicity. He often took solace in Nature and its serenity. We would like to believe that he is simply ‘gone fishing’ while watching a beautiful sunset with perhaps a glimpse of a moose wading in the water, as Maggie lays by his side.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Everyone is welcome to join us for a “Celebration of Life” on Sunday June 26, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at La Salle des Retraités-Senior Hall in Chéticamp. A private graveside service will take place at St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery, officiated by Father Pierre Antoine St-Cyr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Foyer Père Fiset, Recherche et Sauvetage Chéticamp Search and Rescue or your choice of charity.
