  • Ronnie Joseph Larade

    Ronnie Joseph Larade

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Ronnie Joseph Larade, age 64, of French Cove, Nova Scotia on September 22, 2024.

Born in Cheticamp in 1960, Ronnie had fond memories of growing up as the youngest of 21 children in his close-knit French Acadian fishing community.  Although he lived in Toronto for over 20 years, and later retired to the community of French Cove, Cheticamp was always the home of his heart.

Ronnie’s family meant the world to him. He leaves behind his loving wife, Evey Lewis; children, Chris (Lisa) and Mike (Jessie).  Ronnie’s grandchildren were his heart; he will be missed greatly by Avery, Jacob, Isaac, and Blake.

He is also survived by his loving sisters, Annette, Yvette (Paul), Madeleine (Joey), and Freda (Todd); sisters-in-law, Lucy (Ken), and Myla; brother-in-law, Robin (Susan); and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Frederick and Eulalie Larade, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jules, Pierre Louis, Robert, Napoleon, and Roger; his sisters, Lorraine, Marguerite Marie, Marie Ediana, Marie Louise and Marie Adele.

Ronnie had a generous spirit and a warmth that drew others to him.  He was cherished by a large circle of dear friends both in Ontario and Nova Scotia who brought joy and comfort throughout his life.  Ronnie made a lasting impact on both family and friends alike.

Ronnie was well known for his love of the Boston Bruins and avidly watched their games.  The only thing he liked more than when Boston won, was when they won against the Montreal Canadiens.  He loved the music of George Jones and was known to break into a rendition of “He Stopped Loving Her Today” at every opportunity.

Cremation has taken place, and visitation will occur on Sunday, September 29 from 1:30pm to 3pm at Cheticamp Funeral Home.  We welcome both family and friends to join us in honouring and celebrating Ronnie’s life. A private burial will proceed the service (immediate family members only).

For those unable to attend in person, the family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the The Kidney Foundation of Canada in Ronnie’s name.

    Who’s gonna fill their shoes?
    Who’s gonna stand that tall?
    Who’s gonna play the Opry
    And the Wabash cannonball?
Who’s gonna give their heart and soul
To get to me and you?
Lord, I wonder who’s gonna fill their shoes

Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes – George Jones

  • Lucy Angelique Larade

    Lucy Angelique Larade

Age 88, Cheticamp passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. She was a daughter to the late Aimable and the late Helene Mae (Larade) Aucoin.

Maman was a very kind and gentle lady. She never had the chance to attend school as, as the eldest, she was needed at home to care for her sick mom. But that didn’t stop her. She worked very hard her entire life at various jobs and also hooked many large rugs as a sideline. She always dyed her own yarn in the exact shades she wanted to create many masterpieces, and she continued to help her family throughout her life. She could not say no to anyone.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandsons when they were younger and would do anything they wanted….even play goalie in a game of mini sticks. She would always make sure their hockey gear dried well by the woodstove in the basement and that nothing was missing in the hockey bag for the next game. Mémère also made the best pancakes ever.

She would always look forward to her grandsons’ visits with their families. Grand mémère loved her hugs from Paige, Nicklaus, and Blake. She always asked how everyone was doing and wanted to know what everyone was up to, whether it be hockey scores or travel news.

She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

Lucy Angelique is survived by her daughter, Paulette Larade; and her son in law, Fernand, whom she thought the world of; brother, Jimmy (Catherine) Aucoin; sisters, Dorothy (late Albert) Haché, and Patricia (Bobby) Aucoin; sister in law, Sylvia Aucoin; grandchildren, Chris (Sarah) Larade, and Trevor (Amanda) Larade; great-grandchildren, Paige, Nicklaus, and Blake.

Besides her parents, Lucy Angelique was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph William and François; sisters, Thérèse Gelina and Thérèse.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Cheticamp Funeral Home. Burial to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp. Everyone is welcome.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Hospital Charitable Foundation or a charity of your choice.

    Walter “Wally” Hinkley

Walter “Wally” Hinkley, a beloved member of our community, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the age of 75. Wally was a son to the late Manuel Walter and the late Edna Mary (Moore) Hinkley. Wally was known for his unwavering spirit, generous heart, and a life filled with rich experiences and deep connections.

Born on December 7, 1948, Wally grew up with the land and sea as his companions. From a young age, he embraced the challenges and rewards of farming, dedicating decades to cultivating his family’s farm with the same care and passion that he brought to every aspect of his life. His work ethic and commitment were matched only by his love for the ocean, where he spent many years lobster fishing. The early mornings and salt-kissed air were a testament to his resilience and his profound connection to nature.

Wally’s love for the land extended beyond his work. He was an avid gardener, transforming his backyard into a lush haven that was admired by all who visited. His green thumb produced vegetables and flowers that were as vibrant as his personality, and he took great joy in sharing his harvest with friends and family.

An enthusiastic card player, Wally hosted many crib games, where his strategic mind and playful banter made him a favorite among friends. The camaraderie and laughter he shared with his card-playing circle were as cherished as the games themselves.

Family was the cornerstone of Wally’s life. He is survived by his children, Nicole (Megan), Catherine (Riley), Alysha (Ronnie), Clarence “Digger” (Christine), and Sharlene; his grandchildren, Sierra (Justin), Makenna, Brady, Madison, Calee, Breanna (Gordon), Paige, Connor, Dawson, Cole and Blair-Marie; his great-grandchildren, Ariah, Ava, Quintin and Hazel; his sisters, Nora (Stan), Carol, Catherine (Robert), and Madeline.

Wally is predeceased by his soulmate, Elizabeth “Liz”; brother, Donnie; sister, Elsie; and great-granddaughter, Adalynn.

Wally’s love for his family was evident in everything he did, from the lessons he taught them about hard work and respect to the simple joys of spending time together.

Wally’s many friends remember him for his kindness, his quick wit, and his unwavering loyalty. His legacy is one of generosity and deep-rooted connections to both the land and the people he loved.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024 at Cheticamp Funeral Home from 7-9 pm. A memorial service celebrating Wally’s remarkable life will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church, Pleasant Bay with Rev. Peter Rioux officiating. Burial to follow in the Pleasant Bay Cemetery.

  • Ralph Edward Timmons

    Ralph Edward Timmons

    August 24th, 1954 – July 8th, 2024

Ralph Edward Timmons, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away suddenly. Born in Inverness on August 24th, 1954, he was the son of the late Eddie and the late Mary Catherine (Finn) Timmons. Ralph was known for his unwavering selflessness and passion for camping, hunting, fishing, and his love of music. Ralph touched the lives of all who knew him and left everyone smiling. Ralph passed away doing what he loved to do most: camping with his wife of 46 years, the person he loved most, Denise.

Ralph grew up in Inverness before going on to follow his university studies at St. FX in Antigonish. After two years of studying and partying, he moved to Toronto where he began working as a lab technician for Lever. This is where he met the love of his life, Denise (of Grand Étang) in 1976. They were married 2 years later and decided to move back home to Cape Breton to start a family. There was no better place for Ralph to live than Cape Breton Island; the ocean, the wilderness, and the music called to him and it showed in how he spent each and every day. Upon arriving in Cape Breton, he started as a helper on a few fishing boats throughout the 80’s before purchasing his own fishing boat: the “Flying Swan” in the early 90’s. That was eventually replaced with the “Peter Pan,” the “Cory and Kiel,” and finally was able to have his dream boat built, “L’Écossois,” where he and Denise could fish in luxury and comfort until they decided to sell the gear and retire. Throughout his entire fishing career, he graciously shared the fruits of his labours with any visiting family members who thoroughly enjoyed his perfectly cooked crustacean cuisine.

As much as Ralph loved being on the ocean, he was equally in his glory in the Cape Breton wilderness; camping, trout fishing, hunting, skiing, snowshoeing, blueberry picking, and anything else involving nature.  When he wasn’t enjoying the outdoors, nothing made Ralph happier than playing the guitar and singing songs.

Even though he kept himself busy, there was always time for others. He volunteered with plenty of organizations around town including being on the board of AMAC, he was a member of the Cheticamp Search and Rescue for over 30 years, helping new hunters with firearm safety and map and compass classes, and of course he was always willing to sing a tune or seven for any event around town.

This cheerful outdoorsman will be remembered forever by his loving wife Denise, his incredible sons Cory and Kiel (Mandy), and his adored dog, Ila. Survived by his loving siblings, Ralph is remembered by his brother Donnie Timmons (Theresa), and sisters Edna MacNeil (Jimmy), Kathleen Timmons, and Jean MacDonald (Finley), and all of his loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Besides his parents, Ralph was predeceased by his sisters Mary Jesse Gallant (Doug) and Catherine (in infancy).

Cremation has taken place and everyone is welcome to join us at La salle des Retraités – Senior’s Hall in Cheticamp on Saturday, July 13th, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm for a celebration of life and sing-along. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (https://www.heartandstroke.ca/) or a charity that would be dear to Ralph’s heart.

    Lorraine Deveau

Age 72:   It is with great sadness and a heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lorraine Deveau on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 in the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, sister, and friend to many. Lorraine was born on September 18, 1951 to the late Placide and the late Eva May (Covin) Poirier.

Lorraine’s greatest treasures were her family and friends. She was a strong and determined woman with a huge heart. The greatest gift that she shared of herself was the warmth with which she opened her home and heart to everyone. There was always enough to eat for one more at the table and always enough room for one more in the house. As much as she loved her children, the love that she had for her grandchildren and great grandchildren was two-fold. Her faith and her love were a driving force in everything she did for others. She lived fully and enjoyed many laughs with her friends when she would go to Bingo, to TOPS, and played Rummoli. She’d never pass up the opportunity to go on a good shopping trip. To many, she wasn’t only known as “Lorraine” but as “Lorraine the beautiful” as she named herself. In spite of dark days she may have experienced in her life, like the owl, she found her way through the night.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but the memories she has left us with, have now become treasures which we hold close to our hearts.
