  • Thomas Harris

    Thomas Harris

    Age 85, Plateau, Inverness County, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2020 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. He was the son of the late Henri Harris and the late Marie (Poirier) Harris.

    Dad was a lumberjack most of his life up to 1985 when he took ill and surgery rendered him disabled. A few years after his surgery he started delivering the paper for the Chronicle Herald. He did that for many years and was very well liked by his customers. One of his favorite hobbies was rabbit snaring with his brother Louis Pat. He was also a great pool player alongside his other brother Charlie Joe. Playing cards was his last hobby, which led to seeing his little red car parked at the Knights of Columbus where he found many more friends that could almost be called family. He was also a member of KOC Council #3850 and volunteered his time at Bingo selling cards. At night you would find him playing cards with his sisters and family friends.

    Thomas is survived by daughters, Rose Marie (Glen Samson), Brenda (Roger Larade), Christina (Roddie MacDougall), Lise (Greg Lettice), Nicole (Blaze Basker);  brothers, Louis Pat Harris and Charlie Joe Harris; sisters, Marie Adele Evers, Lina Poirier, Sophie Poirier and Geraldine Harris; grandchildren, Leonard Harris, Felicia Larade, Robin and Eric MacDougall, Dillon, Tylor and Cameron Marple, Matthew Miller, Brook, Bradley and Nicholas Basker; great-grandchildren, Andrew Skinner, Austin Harris, Jonathan Larade Simpson, Madison Webb, and Emmett O’Neill. He was predeceased by his wife Laurette (Roach) Harris; granddaughter, Tonya Marple; brother Henri; sisters, Nanette, Marguerite, Juliette, Doris, and Elizabeth.

    A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

    Marie Lorraine Cormier

    Age 86, Chéticamp, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Chéticamp. She was the daughter of the late Pepin and the late Sophie (Arsenault) Ramard. Lorraine was a hardworking mom who gave her undivided love to each and everyone of her children. She was an excellent cook and baker. She loved a good game of cards, knitting, reading, bingo, shopping and travelling, in her best years. Since her arrival at the Foyer Père Fiset, she would appreciate the solitude of her room but still loved to receive visitors to play “Crazy Eights” and to chat. She was forever grateful for the good care she received at the Foyer. She loved you guys. MERCI.

    She is survived by sons, Phillip (Winny), Shubenacadie, Samuel (Amelia), Edmonton, Leonard (Claudia), Chéticamp, and Camille (Lucille), Chéticamp; daughters, Yvette (Gerard), Fredericton, Lucille (Alfred), Chéticamp, Monique (Cyril), Chéticamp, Stella (Steven), Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, and stepdaughter Denise (David), Chéticamp; grandchildren, Christian, Aaron, Natalie (Robert), Shauna (Tyler), Byron (Jillian), Jennifer (Aneill), Joanne (Jason), Lindsey (Logan), Ellen, Gabe, Camren, Jakob, Keigan, Zachary; great grandchildren, Elliott, Jacob, Julien, Allison, Ava, and Giana. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Gabriel Cormier and longtime companion of 20 years, Leopold Chiasson; brothers, Moise, Alex, Joseph, Jean-Paul, Patrice, and Albert; sisters, Mathilda, and Lucy Mae.

    Visitation will be on Saturday, February 15, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. till time of funeral at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.

    Joseph Arthur Poirier

    Age 87, Chéticamp, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, January 27, 2020 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp. Arthur was the son of the late Bennie (Auguste) and the late Marie (Deveau) Poirier.

    Arthur worked in the logging industry as a lumberjack. He also worked at the local fish plant and did carpentry work for Cheticamp Boat Builders.

    Arthur is survived by his partner of 34 years, Marie Jeanne AuCoin; son, Paul Angus Poirier; daughters, Madelaine Poirier (Eddy Boudreau) and Denise Poirier; daughters-in-law, Diane Poirier and Laurette Poirier; sister, Rose Yvonne Bonnel; grandchildren, Fidel Poirier, Isabelle Poirier, Nathalie Poirier, and Marc Poirier; great grandchildren, Emilie Scholfield, Bennett Scholfield, Caileigh Poirier, Josslyn Poirier, and Eliana Chiasson Poirier. He was predeceased by his wife Bella (Roach) Poirier; sons, Gerard Poirier, Willie John Poirier, Victor Poirier; son-in-law, Gélas Poirier; brothers, Placide, Wilfred, Auguste, Henry, Paul; sisters, Lucy Anne, Julie Anne, and Zabeth.

    Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.

  • Joseph Claude LeFort

    Joseph Claude LeFort

    76, of East Margaree, Nova Scotia, passed away suddenly on December 26, 2019.

    Claude was born on August 18, 1943 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia to Paul and Antoinette (Aucoin) LeFort. As the eldest in his family, he went to work at an early age to help his mother and father provide for the family. Claude was married to Josephine (LeBlanc) on July 18,1964. They were living in Toronto at this time and Claude worked at the Goodyear Tire factory. Cyril and Michelle were born during Claude and Josephine’s time in Toronto. However, Cape Breton Island called them home and they returned in 1970. They returned first to Cheticamp, where Leroy was born and then finally settled in East Margaree. Claude and Josephine were married 53 years until Josephine’s sudden death on March 20, 2017.

    After relocating to Cape Breton, Claude worked in the forestry industry cutting pulp, running machinery and driving a truck for Joseph A. LeBlanc Ltd. and John E. MacLean Enterprises. In the late 90’s he worked for a short time in Northern Alberta. Claude was an avid card player and loved attending local card plays. He also loved to fish and was known by all the fly fisherman on the Margaree River. He was a lifetime Honorary Kinsmen, being one of the founding members of the Margaree Kinsmen Club. Most of all he was very proud of his family especially his grandchildren. They will all miss his phone calls, card games and trips to the restaurant for fish and chips.

    Claude is survived by his three children Cyril (Terri), Michelle Arsenault (Earl), Leroy (Wanda); grandchildren Kayla (Mike Kofahl), Bethany Chiasson (Justin), Kegan Arsenault (Kelsey), Jillian Arsenault, Hailee (Ward MacDonald) and Darcie; great grandchild Camryn (Kegan and Kelsey); brother Paul (Emma); sisters Stella Klingemann (Klaus), Dora Maillet (Robert), Ginette (Doris), Therese, Yvonne LeFort-Goosens (Peter) and other extended family and friends.

    Claude is preceded in death by his wife Josephine and brothers Russell, Armand and Cyrille.

    Visitation will be held on Monday, December 30th, 2019 from 7 to 9pm, at St. Michael’s Parish Hall. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, December 31st, 2019 at 11:00 am, at St. Michael’s Church, East Margaree, Nova Scotia. Fr. Bedford Doucette will be officiating along with Fr. Macdonald Ibeh. Interment of ashes will follow the funeral at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

    Pepere, we will carry you with us till we see you again.

    Ethel Bourgeois

    Age 83, Cheticamp, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at the Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp. Ethel was the daughter of the late Marcellin and the late Luce (Doucet) Cormier.

    Ethel is survived by her husband Nectaire Arsène Bourgeois; and son Roger Nectaire (Mireille) Bourgeois. She is also survived by brother, Eugène Cormier; sisters, Évangeline AuCoin, Juliette Poirier, Marguerite Chiasson and Émerise MacDonald; grandson, Michel Bourgeois. She was predeceased by sisters, Marie-Jeanne Cormier and Marie Cormier.

    Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2019 from 7-9pm at St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 10:30am in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

    Michael Larade

    Age 63, Kinsmen Heights, Cheticamp passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2019 in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Michael was the son of Dorine (Camus) and the late Pierre Louis Larade. Besides his mother Michael is survived by his wife Dauphine Camus; and son Jeremy Larade (Elise). He is also survived by brothers, Stanley (Geraldine), Leo (Susan), Roger (Brenda), Robert (Yvette), and Hayden (Barb); sisters, Marie Stella (Sam), Linda ( Alister), Nancy (George), and Madeline (Peter). Michael was predeceased by two sisters Isabelle and Odette.

    Many thanks to the Whycocomagh First responders and the staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. A celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Senior Citizen’s Hall, Cheticamp.

  • Ephrem Bourgeois

    Ephrem Bourgeois

    Age 80, Cheticamp passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 12th, 2019 in Gables Lodge, Amherst, N.S. He was the son of the late Pierre and the late Marie Anne (LeFort) Bourgeois. Ephrem was a well known fiddle player, when it came to weddings and parties among his friends and family. He also played in different bands including the original “Silver Five.”

    Ephrem is survived by brothers, Pierre Levis (Shirley), Sackville, N.S.; Vincent, Montreal; Henrie (Yvette), Cheticamp; and Roger (Laurette), Cheticamp; sisters, Louise Anna, Cheticamp; Zabeth (George), Cheticamp; Stella (Wilburt), Cheticamp; Marguerite (Michel), Cheticamp; and Monique (Hugh), Edmonton. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Emile and Alphonse.

    Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at a later date.

  • Loretta Marie Aucoin

    Loretta Marie Aucoin

    Age 87, Chéticamp passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday November 16th, 2019.

    Loretta was born in Cap Le Moine, Inverness County, NS, the 2nd daughter of the late Johnny Burns and Annie (Doucet) Burns. She was predeceased by siblings Lucy Dora (Clovy) Aucoin, Thomas (Antoinette), Lionel (Marie Stella), and Bernadette (Art) Leblanc. She is survived by siblings Velma (Paul) Leblanc, Alec John (Mary Louise) and Roger (Mary).

    Married to the late Joseph Edmond (Joe) Aucoin in 1952, they raised seven children in Toronto – Alan (Adrienne), Joanne Patience (Paul) Strome, Norman (Karin), Brian (Teresa), David (Shelley), Kevin (Lynda) and Steven (Sandi). Her ambitious work ethic was a positive example to her family, as was her love of winter sports – whether tobogganing, skating, or skiing – she was always willing and able to join in the fun with her children. She was a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. She was always present in the kitchen ensuring healthy meals and snacks were prepared and healthy lunches were packed. She was an avid storyteller and for almost two decades read her children stories before bedtime. She became an accomplished seamstress, knitter, and took great delight in baking and cooking for family and friends, hosting showers and other parties, especially during the holidays.

    Every summer, Loretta and Joe drove to Cape Breton for their vacation and their children soon shared their attachment to the island’s culture, the rugged environment, their extended family and the music. Taking early retirement, Joe and Loretta moved to Point Cross in 1982, where she began a life-long love of walking an hour each day. Five years later, they returned to Toronto when Joe’s health deteriorated, and he passed away within two years. She remained in Mississauga, where she was an active grandmother to her many young grandchildren, until they had all grown up. It was also during this time that she began attending live theatrical performances, which she enjoyed tremendously. Twenty years later, at 75 years of age, she retired once more to Cheticamp.

    Besides her children, in-laws and many nieces and nephews, she also leaves 16 grandchildren – Lauren (Patience) Agirovski, Alicia (Patience) Stein, Monique (Aucoin) Mikulec , Isabel, Joey, Justin, Robert, Chris, Mike, Elyse, Diana, Daniel, Ryan, Mitchell, Jeremy & Adam Aucoin – and 3 great-grandchildren – Evan Stein, Rose & Aurelia Mikulec.

    Many thanks to the caring staff at The Foyer Père Fiset who made her final months in Long Term Care as comfortable as possible during her rapid decline.

    Visitation will be held at Chéticamp Funeral Home on Friday, November 22nd, 2019 from 4 -7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Église Saint-Pierre, Chéticamp on Saturday November 23rd, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Family and friends are invited for refreshments following the mass at the Chéticamp Senior Citizen’s Hall.

    Paul Henri Roach

    Age 91, Cheticamp, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16th, 2019 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp with his family by his side. Paul was the son of the late Patrick (Padé) and the late Marianne (LeFort) Roach.

    He was a devoted husband, a great dad to our family and he enjoyed chatting and especially teasing his grandson Glen. He enjoyed outdoor adventures such as snowmobiling, 4 wheeler excursions, fishing and hunting. Picking blueberries, strawberries and raspberries was also a pass time for him.

    There was always a full house, whether it was playing cards, having a cup of tea, sharing a drink or a kitchen party. His feet tapped to music till the very end. Other nights, he was out dancing with his loving wife of 64 years, Amelia, and those daily trips to the restaurant with his youngest daughter Della for coffee or to have a good lunch, will not be forgotten. He was a very patient man and had a positive attitude. Only a few words describe Paul… HE LOVED LIFE!!!!

    Paul worked at Fraser & Chiasson Building Supplies as a carpenter for many years and later was employed by Chéticamp Boatbuilders as a Master Boatbuilder until his retirement.

    He is survived by his wife Amelia Roach; daughters, Corinne Doucette (Eric), Paula Larade (Rene), and Della Roach, all of Chéticamp; sister, Maria Dodge (John), Chéticamp; grandson, Glen Larade, Halifax. He was predeceased by a brother Alphonse Roach; sisters, Helene AuCoin and Marie Adele Poirier.

    Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 21st, 2019 at 10:30am at Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of one’s choice.

  • Marie Carmelle Maillet

    Marie Carmelle Maillet

    The family of Marie “Carmelle” Maillet, aged 71 of Moncton NB, is saddened to announce her passing on November 15, 2019 in Moncton City Hospital exactly one month after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.  Born in Chéticamp, NS on August 24, 1948, she was the eldest child of the late Henri and Marie Eva (Bourgeois) Maillet of Petit Étang, Inverness County, NS.  She is survived by brothers René Maillet, Inverness; Daniel Maillet (Nora Henderson), Bedford; sister Diane McNeil, Halifax; nephew Jonathan McNeil, nieces Lisa McNeil and Hannah Maillet.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by twin sisters at birth.

    Carmelle lived a life of service and generosity.  She worked as an RN in Chéticamp and Moncton and ended her career as a pioneer with the Extra-Mural Program providing home and community based health care services in New Brunswick.  After retirement, she did volunteer work for hospice care.  She led a happy, healthy and active lifestyle.  She will be lovingly remembered for her ability in gathering people and building lasting friendships.  She had a way of bringing out the best in people and making them believe in themselves.

    Carmelle was devoted to caring for her family and friends all her life.  She truly believed that laughing is good for the soul.  Her legacy of kindness and selflessness will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know her and be loved by her.  She made a difference.

    Cremation has taken place. There is no visitation by Carmelle’s request.  Funeral Mass will be held at Église Saint-Pierre, Chéticamp on Wednesday, November 20 at 10:30am with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating.  Interment in the parish cemetery.  Donations in Carmelle’s memory may be kindly directed to Hospice Southeast New Brunswick, 640 Mountain Road, Moncton, NB E1C 2P3 in support of residential hospice care.
