    Joseph Clifford Poirier

    Age 78, Cheticamp, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side on July 18, 2019 in Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp. Clifford was the son of the late Johnny Henry and the late Henriette Beatrice (Roach) Poirier.

    He is survived by his wife, Hilda Poirier; sons, Kevin Poirier (Melissa Larade), Adam Poirier (Beth Muise), and Réné Poirier; daughters, Christine Poirier (Dwayne Poirier), Angie Poirier, Amanda Poirier (Danny MacQuarrie), Vicky Poirier; brother, Claude Poirier and brother-in-law, Sandy Harris; sisters, Claudette Powers, Jeannine Marple (Winston), and sisters-in-law, Denise Poirier and Marie Poirier; 5 grandchildren, Maya Lynn C. Aucoin, Byron Poirier, Tyson MacQuarrie, Brooke MacQuarrie, and Skylar Poirier. He was predeceased by daughter Rina Poirier; brothers, Gelas, Paul Emile, and Wilfred; brother-in-law, Johnny Power; sisters, Marie Hilda, Marie Adèle, and sister-in-law, Marie Elizabeth Poirier.

    Visitation will be held on Monday, July 22, 2019 at Cheticamp Funeral Home with visiting hours from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in Église St. Pierre with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating.   • Evelyn Azilda Aucoin

    Evelyn Azilda Aucoin

    Age 88, of Cheticamp passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 12, 2019. Born in St. Joseph du Moine on November 8, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Patrick and the late Rose (Chiasson) Aucoin. She worked as a Nursing Aid at Sacred Heart Hospital for many years. She also did some nursing in Perth Andover and Fredericton and came back to St. Joseph du Moine to care for her parents. Evelyn learned to play the violin and the guitar at a very young age and kept playing throughout her life for her own enjoyment. She was a very good cook, a gift she got from her mother. Evelyn was also a good card player and enjoyed going to Bingo for a social evening with her friends. The visit of her friends really made her days more interesting. Evelyn had a pleasant personality and enjoyed being with her friends and family.

    She is survived by her special friend Rita Saulnier; many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers Wilfred, Luc, Gerard, Joseph, Willie Dave and Bernie; sisters, Beatrice, Ida, Lillian and Yvonne.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, 2019 at Cheticamp Funeral Home with visiting hours from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 20, 2019 in Église St. Pierre with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, St. Joseph du Moine. Donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or St. Joseph’s Parish.

  • Phillip Poirier

    Phillip Poirier

    Age 65, Chéticamp. Phillip was born on December 1st, 1953 and raised in Chéticamp. He died peacefully on July 12, 2019 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp after a short battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Felix and the late Marie (Roach) Poirier. He was predeceased by brother Leo and sister Marie.

    Phillip was known by many from all over Cape Breton Island and beyond. He was an avid sports fan and was the #1 Minor Hockey pool seller for over 30 years. Many children were able to play hockey because of Phillip’s fundraising efforts for Trail Minor hockey. Phillip leaves no immediate family but does have a whole community mourning his passing. He was special to everyone. He leaves behind special friends and family, Billy, Brenda Lee, Corey, Ashley and family, the entire staff at Le Gabriel Restaurant/Bar; Laurette, Donat and family; staff and management at Doryman Pub & Grill, Mr. Chicken, Your Dollar Store with More and especially Alfred Arthur who always made sure Phillip’s worm selling business was well taken care of, Restaurant Évangeline, Le P’tit Chady, Le Club Kinsmen de Chéticamp and his “marraine” Adrienne Desveau. He will be greatly missed by Marc, Lyne, Brooke, MacKenzie and Marcus Larade. He will be welcomed with open arms by family and special friend, Yvon.

    Special thank-you to nurses, doctors, continuing care, and palliative care at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre. Phillip you have left a mark on our hearts and you will never be forgotten. No visitation. Photos will be displayed at back of church one hour before funeral mass which will be celebrated on Thursday, July 25th at 10:30 a.m. in Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp, with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. All are welcome to a light lunch and slideshow presentation at the Cabot Trail Arena following funeral mass.     Josephine Coffin

    Age 85. We announce the passing of Josephine Coffin on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in Inverary Manor, Inverness. Born in Chéticamp, she was the daughter of the late George Deveau and the late Sophie Boudreau. As a young adult she entered religious life with Les Filles de Jésus. She found much joy and was very proud of her profession as a teacher at NDA School in Chéticamp, in Arichat, and also in Halifax for another 20 years. She was married to Earle Coffin for 35 years and lived in Halifax during this time. She was a wonderful painter and it brought her much comfort. Family and friends were very important and dear to her heart. She died in the Inverary Manor in Inverness where she was very well taken care of.

    Josephine is survived by one brother, Paul Antoine (Patricia) Deveau, Chéticamp; one sister, Germaine Chiasson, several nieces and nephews.  Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Earle Coffin; brother Vincent Deveau; sisters, Luce Marie Boudreau and Lucienne Deveau. No visitation. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. in Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp, with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

  • Bernadette Chiasson

    Bernadette Chiasson

    Our mom passed away very peacefully at the ripe young age of 97, on July 9, 2019 in Oddfellows Nursing Home, Pictou, with loving family by her side. She was the daughter of the late John à Stanislaus and Josephine (Boudreau) LeFort.

    Born in Cheticamp, she lived most of her married life in Point Cross and then moved to the Cheticamp Senior Apartments until February, 2018 when she moved to Pictou.

    Our mom was a life-time member of Les Dames de Ste. Anne, Cheticamp. During her long life, mom had a special passion for berry picking. She could spend hours in the fields losing all track of time. She was also a wonderful cook and baker of French Acadian dishes such as fricots and meatpies. She also hooked Cheticamp Acadian rugs for many years.

    In her recent years, she loved her rocking chair to pray and sing old Acadian French songs. She also had a great faith in St. Anthony and good St.Anne. She cherished the three pilgrimages that she took to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, the last one being during her 90th birthday.

    Our mom wants to send a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Marcel AuCoin, Cheticamp and Dr. Randy Burill, Pictou for their great loving care over the years.

    Last but not least, mom found love and ultimate peace and comfort in her new home in Pictou. She wants to thank each and everyone from the bottom of her heart for their tender and compassionate care each and every single day.

    She is survived by daughters, Jeannette Beaver, Sydney, and Sylvia (Francis) Bonaparte, Pictou; sons, Ephraim Chiasson, Grand Etang, and Maurice (Lily) Chiasson, Charlottetown; grandchildren, Robert (Barb) AuCoin, Charles (Robin) Beaver, Harold (Pam) Beaver, Nicolle Chiasson, Bradley (Marie) Bonaparte, Colin Bonaparte, Amanda Bonaparte (Wil Gamble), Laura (Kate) Collinet, Kathie Chiasson, and Paul Chiasson; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Ethel Deveaux, Cheticamp, and special friends, Edith and Victorine.

    She was predeceased by her husband Placide; son and daughter-in-law Leonard and Yvonne (Arsenault) Chiasson; daughter, Josephine and son-in-law Clifford AuCoin, daughter-in-law Michelle (Tweedie) Chiasson; brothers, Amedee, Arthur, Joseph, Edmond, Stanley, Leo, and Johnnie; sisters, Marie Helene, Sadie, Lucie Mae, Cecile, Marie Isabelle, Marie Louise, and Annie Mae.

    Visitation is today, Tuesday, July 16, 2019, from 7-9 p.m. at Cheticamp Funeral Home, Cheticamp. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Église St. Pierre, Cheticamp with Father Pierre Antoine St.Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.     Albert Joseph Roach

    Age 81, of Plateau, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2019 at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. He was the son of the late Louis and Rose (Chiasson) Roach. Albert is survived by his son Kevin; daughter, Yvette (Claudie) LeBlanc, and their mother Yvonne LeBlanc.

    Albert was from a large family. He is survived by sisters, Cecile (Clarence) Felix, Emilia (Louis Pat) Harris, Helen Rose (Bernie Doucet), Elizabeth AuCoin, and Therese Harris; several nieces and
    nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Gracien and Jean Nazaire; sisters, Yvonne Gallant, Zelma Roach, Louise Anne Chiasson, Bella Poirier, Laurette Harris and Marie Annie Roach.     Age 71, Cheticamp. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Laurette Chiasson on Friday,
    July 5, 2019 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. We will remember Laurette for always having her door open with a warm, loving heart and sweets on the table, and her great
    love for her family. She was always ready for a good game of cards. We will always remember her for her strong faith.

    Laurette is survived by her husband, of 49 years, Daniel Joseph Chiasson; daughters, Donna Chiasson (Jules Camus) and Gisele Chiasson (Trevor MacNeil); brothers, Clarence (Linda) , Arthur (Sylvia) ,

    Jeannine Marie LeBlanc

    It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Jeannine LeBlanc, 57, Cheticamp, which occurred on June 23, 2019 at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp.

    Born in Cheticamp, she was the daughter of the late Thérèse and Dave LeBlanc. Jeannine worked at many different jobs. She loved to be surrounded by people as she worked as a waitress and a bartender. At Paturel Seafood, she loved to help the fishermen. She also was most content when she worked outdoors, whether it was fishing or scrubbing cars at the car wash. She also volunteered her time doing yard work and shoveling the sidewalks on the Cheticamp main road. She was very proud when she received recognition for her hard work.

    Jeannine had many hobbies including reading, making puzzles and working on her Paint by Numbers. She was very competitive while playing hockey and cards, whether it be crib or “La dame de pique”. She was best known for her adventurous personality and for telling it like it is.

    She is survived by her sister, Paulette Fraser (Ricky) and her 5 brothers, Réné (Linda), Lionel (Stella), Chester (Mona), Kevin, and Ronnie (Lisa). She will also be missed by her 8 nieces and nephews as well as her 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.

    Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at Église St. Pierre, Cheticamp, with Deacon Gerald LeBlanc officiating. Donations in her memory can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Patient Fund.

    Age 94 of Chéticamp, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 in Foyer Père Fiset, Chéticamp. Born in Chéticamp, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Josephine (Roach) Boudreau. Judy was loved by many. She was most content when surrounded by family and friends. In her early years, Judy loved to cook and garden. She was an outstanding mama and mémère. She had a great sense of humor. In her later years, you would find Judy chatting with her many friends, however, was she was at her happiest when her daughter Linda came for one of her many long visits.

    Judy is survived by her sons, Lionel and Rheal Aucoin; daughter, Linda (Ken) Gillis; sisters, Teresa, Marie May, Elizabeth (Leonard), Marie-Rose (Yvon), and Marie-Alice (Roger); brother, Eddie (Madelaine); her 11 grandchildren, Jeff (Bridget), Richard (Stella), Marc, Kevin (Lovey), Cheryl (Michael), Shawn (Kirsten), Kimberly (Craig), Michelle (Conner), Trevor, Tricia, and Stephen; 13 great grandchildren, Brittany-Lynn, Jacob, Ryan, Adam, Ben, Heidi, David, Maya, Shawnee, Kendra, Justin, Michael, and May. Judy was predeceased by her husband Léo Henry Aucoin, son; Arthur Aucoin; brothers, Léo, Charles, Henrie-Joe, Wilfred, Paulite, and Joseph-Levis; sisters, Marie-Louise and Lucienne.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, June 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Chéticamp Funeral Home.  Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating.   • Marie Domithilde Deveau

    Marie Domithilde Deveau

    It is with great sorrow that we, the 6 children and all family relatives announce the passing of our “Maman,” Marie Domithilde Deveau, Point Cross, at the age of 95, on May 31, 2019, in the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. She was the wife of the late Edmond T. Deveau.  Born in Plateau, Mom came from a large family of whose parents were Placide and Sophie Poirier. Mom, in her long and enjoyable 95 years of life was blessed with fairly good health until recently when she battled cancer for a few years. Her great faith and constant prayers certainly helped her carry her “cross” to the end of her earthly journey.

    We the family members greatly appreciate the many good deeds that so many people have done for Mom. We are especially thankful for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Medical team and support staff who were so devoted to patient care, as well as Dr. Saliba and his entire nursing and support staff at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, including the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Treatment Centre. A special thank you to the entire administration and staff of the Holy Redeemer Convent who were so compassionate and caring for Mom and anyone who needed accommodations. In her final phase of life, Mom received remarkable care from all the doctors and support staff at the Cheticamp Community Health Centre, a special thank you.

    She is survived by sons; Alphonse, Paul Joe (Rita), Claudie (Dale), daughters; Marie Sophie (Gordon), Emelia (Sheldon), and Leona (Leonard), sister; Annie Blanche AuCoin (the last remaining member of her family). She is also survived by grandchildren; Cathy, Brian, Brenda, Darlene, Michelle, and Cindy, great-grandchildren; Jessica, Amanda, Avery, Jesse, Tanner, Ella, Alyssa, and Ashleigh. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 2pm at Église St. Pierre, Cheticamp with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial in parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
