  • Roderick Joseph “Roddy” Camus

    Roderick Joseph “Roddy” Camus

    It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our son, Roderick Joseph “Roddie” Camus, age 44 of Maison Roderigue, Chéticamp on October 30, 2018 in Sacred Heart Community Health Center, Chéticamp. Born in Baddeck, Victoria Co., he was a son of Joseph André and Gisele Anne (Haché) Camus. “Lost our boy twice” at age 3 1\2, Roddy had to leave his home and be placed at Sydney Training Center for three and a half years followed by a six month period at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax to be monitored and placed on a program and medications for seizures. Upon his discharged he then was placed in Pictou Training Center for 12 years. Finally in 1993 we were able to bring him closer to home when the Green Door Society known now as “C.A.R.E.S.” provided us with the umbrella to build a home called “La Maison Rodrigue” where Roddy was well-loved and cared for during the last 25 years. Thank you to all employees who cared, nurtured and loved him like their own. Today we say good-bye again to eternity. Fly high our lovely blue eyed boy, Mom, Dad and family. Roddy is survived by brother, Kevin John (Paula Aucoin) Camus; sister, Michelle (Camus) Deveau, her husband, Joël Deveau; niece, « Hope » Marie Ann Deveau; and several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Sandé and Katy May Haché, paternal grandparents, Napoléon and Jeannette Camus. Visitation will take place on Saturday, November 3rd, in Église Saint-Pierre Vestry, Chéticamp at 10 a.m. until time of funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. The burial to follow in the parish cemetery. No flowers please. Memorial donations may be made to C.A.R.E.S., P.O.     Gloria Mae Hunt

    After a courageous battle with cancer, Gloria Mae Hunt, age 61 of Belle Cote, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2018 in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp. Born in Boswarlos, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Harold Martin and the late Greta (Jesso) Martin. Gloria will forever be remembered for the kind spirit to everyone she encountered throughout her life. Gloira is survived by her husband, Wade Hunt; son, Joseph (Tanya) Hunt, South West Margaree; daughter, Tracy (Dion) Hillier, Cambridge, Ont.; sisters, Wanda Hoskins, Sandy Harvey, Paula Martin, all of Newfoundland; grandchildren, Rebecca, Wilson and Brandon Hunt, Daniel and Dylan Hillier; special aunt, Rita Companion, Newfoundland. A celebration of her life will be held in Belle Cote Community Centre at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services Ltd.

  • “Victor” Daniel Aucoin

    It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Aucoin of Chéticamp, formerly of Grand Etang at the age of 75 which occurred on Wednesday, October 10th, 2018 in the Inverary Manor, Inverness. Born in Chéticamp, he was the son of the late Johnny à John and Laura (Cormier) Aucoin. Victor was a devoted provider for his family who enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, especially at l’AMAC on Tuesday nights. He was an auto mechanic at his “Texaco” garage for many years among many other jobs. He was a volunteer fireman for the Lemoine Fire Department and a member of the K.O.C., Council # 3850. He volunteered for many community organizations. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Anna Aucoin; sons, Vic Aucoin (Deb) , Adrien, Rémi (Sylvie) Aucoin; daughters, Micheline (Sandy) Ross, Victorine Roach (Robert), Debra (Robert) Doucet, Glenna (Gordon) Arsenault; brother, Maurice (Marcella) Aucoin; sisters, Corrine (Glen) Murdy, Jeanne Deveau, Laurel LeFort, Glenna Rainville (Conrad); grandchildren, Fabian, Kelton, Rénée, Liam, Céline, Danelle, Dillon, Sawyer, Riley, Alyssa, Eddie; great-grandchild, Koster. He was predeceased by brother, Harvey; sisters, Béatrice Deveaux and Léa Caissie.     Jeannette Aucoin

    We announce the death of Jeannette (Muise) Aucoin, age 93 of Chéticamp who passed away on October 4, 2018 in Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Chéticamp.  Born in Cap-Rouge, she was the daughter of the late Simon Muise and Mathilde (Aucoin) Muise.  Jeannette was very religious and loved saying her rosary. She loved playing cards and picking wild berries. She had a big heart and would have given everything she owned to her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Jeannette spent the last two years of her life at the Foyer Père Fiset where she was taken care of by their loving staff, which she had at heart and would always say ‘Merci, merci, merci!’. Jeannette’s family greatly appreciates everything le Foyer Père Fiset staff has done for her and for all their loving care.  Jeannette is survived by sons, Léo, Yvon (Louise Anne), Claude (Yolande), Gélas (Jeannine); daughters, Yvonne (Danny), Laurette (Roger), Anne Marie (Gelas), Marie Sylvie (Normand), Marie Hilda (Gilles), Ginette (Nicholas); brother, Georgie; 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband Simon L.     Effie Luce “Phyllis” Chiasson

    Age 83, of Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, formerly of St. Joseph du Moine, Inverness Co., passed away on July 14, 2018 in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp with family by her side. Born on March 13, 1935 in Chéticamp, she was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Beatrice (Poirier) LeBrun. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 20, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in Église Saint-Joseph, Saint-Joseph du Moine with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating.     It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Dolores Ann Fraser, age 73 of Cheticamp, formerly of Pleasant Bay, which occurred on July 12, 2018 in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp with her loving family by her side. Dolores was born on September 1, 1944 in Byng Inlet, Ont., and was a daughter to the late James and Edna (Charette) Lamore. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth R. Fraser; son, Kevin Fraser; daughter, Deborah Fraser (Bobby); brother, Lloyd (Hilda) Lamore; sister, Lenore Merrey; granddaughter, Cynthia Fraser; sisters-in-law, Gaile, Louise, Adrienne; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Leonard, Ernie, Wayne and Gordie Lamore; sister, Brenda Olds; sister-in-law, Vivian Lamore and brother-in-law, Dave Merrey. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Pleasant Bay Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.     Herbert “Herbie” Absolum Young

    It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of our dear partner, brother, uncle and friend, Herbie on July 8th, 2018 in Pleasant Bay. Herbie was born in Welland, Ontario on March 15, 1965 to the late Ralph and Mary (Bishop) Young. Herbie had the kindest heart and was a friend to all. He enjoyed a competitive game of darts or any Montreal Canadians game that may be on television. He could often be found out and about on his four-wheeler or spending time with his favorite nephew J.R. He worked as a commercial fisherman for 27 years with his brother-in-law, Douglas and enjoyed their hunting trips every autumn. Herbie is survived by his partner Tara LeBlanc, Sydney; sisters, Lorraine Muise, Cheticamp, Jesse and brother-in-law, Douglas MacKinnon of Pleasant Bay as well as many nieces and nephews and his special nephew J.R. Muise. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Mary; sisters, Darlene, Carol, Pat and Nancy; brothers, Larry and Ralph. Visitation will be held on Thursday in St. Andrew’s United Church, Pleasant Bay with visiting hours from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 3 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church with Pastor Maggie Plant officiating.     Pauline Mary MacDonald

    We announce the death of Pauline Mary MacDonald, age 85 of Chéticamp, who died on July 5, 2018 in Sacred Heart Community Health Center, Cheticamp. Born in Pleasant Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alex Fraser and Mamie (Chiasson) Fraser. Pauline was a person loved by many. She, in turn, was abundantly generous with her love for others. She had a gentle way of engaging people, always interested in them, and a natural way of making people love her. She raised her family, with her husband Rod, in Dartmouth. Together they created a beautiful family home, using their skills and talents to do most of the work themselves. Pauline was a talented seamstress and a cook and showed her love through food and the beautiful creations she shared with her family and friends. She loved spending time with her granddaughter, Samantha Mamie, who acquired her love of cooking and love of style from her “Mémère’’. Pauline passed on an appreciation of her Acadian heritage and hometown Chéticamp to her children and husband, and eventually Pauline and Rod built their beloved Thornhill summer home overlooking the town and the Cape Breton highlands. They loved their summers there and Thornhill later became Pauline’s permanent home. Near the end, Pauline was embraced by the love of her family and dearest friends, whose love for her was evident and who she held dear to her throughout her life. She is survived by son, Laurie Michael MacDonald, Edmonton, Alta.; daughters, Cynthia Susan MacDonald, Bridgetown; Jennifer Ann Hill (Philip Richard), Victoria, B.C.; grandchild Samantha Mamie Hill, Victoria, B.C. She was predeceased by her husband, John Rod MacDonald; brother, Kenneth Fraser. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation.   • Louis “Aurel” Fiset

    Louis “Aurel” Fiset

    Age 76, of Grand Etang, Inverness Co., passed away on June 24th, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 6th, 1942 in Chéticamp, he was the son of the late Pierre and Josephine (Doucet) Fiset. Aurel will be remembered as a kind, patient and gentle soul that was never the loudest voice in the room. He was selfless and always ready to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. His tired, hard-working hands and sharp mind were his true craft. There isn’t a local fisherman, farmer, logger or mechanic that he didn’t help at some point in time. A diesel mechanic by trade and a fisherman by heart, he was a loyal buddy to all who knew him well. He was also a founding member of the LeMoine Volunteer Fire Department. His greatest devotion was to his family; Aurel was a loving husband, a very proud father and grandfather. His family filled his heart with joy. He was greatly admired and will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by his wife, Germaine Fiset; daughter, Brenda (Stéphane) Fiset Doucet, Dartmouth; daughter-in-law, Tammy MacGregor-Fiset, Grand Etang; brothers, Wilfred (Wilfreda) Fiset, Roderigue (Patricia) Fiset, Armand (Annette) Fiset, all of Chéticamp; grandchildren, Brendon Fiset, Hailey Fiset, Sophie Doucet, Thomas Doucet. Predeceased by son, Kevin Fiset; brothers, Aurel Louis Fiset in infancy, Jean Pierre Fiset. Cremation has taken place.     Aged 88 –  We announce the passing of our mother which occurred on June 23rd, 2018 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre. Born in Chéticamp, she was the daughter of the late Amédée Larade and Annie (Aucoin) Larade. Marie Angélique was a caregiver, a hardworker and loved to clean. She enjoyed her daily phone calls from her precious sisters and always looked forward to visits from her homecare ladies who soon became her friends. Her love of her family and friends was always evident and she was very proud of her grandchildren. “We will love and remember you every day Maman. On t’aime un gros pilo xo.” Marie Angélique is survived by sons, Réné (Paula) Larade, Médée (Deborah) Larade; daughter, Pauline (Donald) Boudreau; sisters, Pauline Sabean, Inverness Manor, Inverness, Dora Larade, Inverness Manor, Inverness, Hattie Larade, Inverness, Alma Larade, Inverness, Sylvia (Susan Helpard) Larade, Halifax;  grandchildren, Glen Larade, Daniel Boudreau, Dillon and Renita Larade. Besides her parents, Marie Angélique was predeceased by her husband Arthur D. Larade; one infant son; brothers, Joseph Larade, Paulo Larade; sister Chantale Larade. Cremation has taken place.
