  • Gérald LeBlanc

    Gérald LeBlanc

    Age 71, Petit Etang passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. He was a son to the late Mederick and the late Justile (Aucoin) LeBlanc.

    In his early years, Gérald worked as a truck driver for P.C. Bourgeois, followed by many years at Cormier’s Service Station and retired from C.A.R.E.S. (Green Door) after 12 years, where he treated the residents as his own children. After retirement, he worked a summer at the NSLC and L’Acabie. Gérald was secretary for the Chéticamp Volunteer Fire Department and was Commanding Officer for the Army Cadets for many years.

    Always the entertainer, he loved making people laugh, music, dancing, and playing cards. There was no better Santa at Christmas. Following retirement, his passions were spending time with his grandkids and mowing the lawn.

    Gérald is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ginette (Poirier) LeBlanc; son, Gary (Marsha); daughter, Jessica (Chris); brothers, Charles Joseph (Judy), Neddie (Liza), and Roland (Angie); sister, Camelle Larade; grandchildren, Henry and Felix.

    Besides his parents, Gérald was predeceased by his brother, Roger; and sister, Pauline.

    Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at Cheticamp Funeral Home from 2-4 pm followed by funeral service at 4 pm at the Funeral Home. Burial to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp.

    Memorial donations may be made in Gérald’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Sacred Heart Hospital Charitable Foundation.

  • Roderick Pierre Fiset

    Roderick Pierre Fiset

    Age 74, Cheticamp passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Roderick was a son of the late Pierre and the late Josephine (Doucet) Fiset.

    Roderick worked as a member of Local 73 as a Tig Welder from 1969-2008, when he retired. Over those 38 years, he became respected as a master of his trade, while remaining very humble. His passion and knowledge have been lovingly passed on to his two sons, Curtis and Rodney. During many of those welding years, he worked at many welding shops, and fished crab with his brothers, on the Helene Pierre.

    In 2008, Roderick dedicated his time fishing crab with his son in law, Gilles Larade and his daughter, Cortney on Carter’s Catch.

    He was always willing to lend a helping hand in his shed without wanting anything in return. He had a huge heart and touched many lives with his kindness. Roderick was a volunteer fireman for many years. He enjoyed trout fishing with his brothers, playing 200, and watching his favorite team, the Montreal Canadiens, play.

    Throughout his sickness, he had constant care and companionship from his beloved wife, Patricia, and his loyal german shepherd, Jack. Although he was a man of few words, he loved and felt deeply for his family and friends, who will miss him dearly.

    Roderick is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, Curtis Fiset and Rodney (Jessica) Fiset; daughters, Amanda (Claude) Deveau and Cortney (Gilles) Larade; brother, Wilfred (Freda) Fiset; grandchildren, Parker Fiset, Summer Deveau, Chloe Fiset, Ava Fiset, Dustin Fiset, Chase Fiset. Carter Larade, and Emma Larade.

    Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Vincent Aurel Fiset, Aurel Fiset, Armand Fiset, and Jean Pierre Fiset.

    Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 1-4 pm at Cheticamp Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 4 pm in the funeral home. Burial to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp.

    Memorial donations in Roderick’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society.

    We would like to thank Dr. Amélie Maillet and the nursing staff of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre for their compassionate care in Roderick’s final days.

  • Joseph Arthur Deveaux

    Joseph Arthur Deveaux

    Age 82 – It is with sadness that we announce the death of Joseph Arthur Deveaux at Foyer Père Fiset, on March 12, 2023. Born in Chéticamp he was a son of the late Lubin Deveaux and the late Éléonore (Bourgeois) Deveaux.

    Joseph Arthur was a devoted fan of the Montreal Canadiens, loved fiddle music, fishing, gardening and Toyota cars. He enjoyed visiting family and friends during Sunday drives with his loving wife of 49 years Léa who was always by his side, together till the end. His son Bruce was his pride and joy without forgetting his love for Bernadette, his son’s common-law wife and two grand-children, Craig and Loressa.

    In his early years, Joseph Arthur worked at the Cheticamp Cooperative Fish plant then joined the staff at Foyer Père Fiset for 33 years of service. Joseph Arthur was a quiet, shy, spiritual man with few words. He was very appreciative, humble and caring toward others. A kind soul.. nevertheless he could be very witty and be seen grinning and chuckling when a good joke was said.

    Along with his wife Léa (Aucoin) Deveaux, he is survived by his son Bruce (Bernadette Michael); grand-children, Loressa Michael and Craig Michael. He was predeceased by brother, Sémi Deveaux, sister, Julie Mae Bourgeois.

    The family wishes to send a special thank-you to the staff and members of l’Acabie, Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Homecare Services, Foyer Père Fiset. Dr. Claudie Aucoin, Dr. Marcel Aucoin, Dr. Paul Sonier, Dr. Michel Chiasson and Dr. Amélie Maillet for their loving, supportive and compassionate care over the years.

    Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 9:30am until time of funeral at 10:30am in St. Peter’s Parish Church, Chéticamp with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating.   • Arthur P. Boudreau

    Arthur P. Boudreau

    It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur P. Boudreau, 86 years old, from Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. He was the son of the late Henri-Jean Boudreau and the late Josephine (LeFort) Aucoin.

    He is survived by his sisters, Giselle (Robert) Urquhart, Dundee, and Linda (late Bernie) Beaton, Little Judique;  his brother, Gilles (late Janis) Aucoin, Calabogie, Ont.

    He is also survived by his goddaughter, Lianne (Brian) Larade, (with whom he resided before moving to the Foyer), and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Arthur was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Emile (late Barb); and sister, Laurette (late Matt) Kohut.

    Arthur enjoyed a quiet life, the outdoors and hockey being his favorite pastimes. He was a loyal Montreal Canadian fan. He spent much time at the rink, cheering on local teams, or traveling to neighboring rinks with Kenneth, Lianne’s son, who was a hockey referee. Arthur was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed playing and volunteering at Bingo.

    We wish to thank the staff of the Foyer Père Fiset for the compassionate care they gave Arthur, and for being so welcoming to his family. Donations in his memory can be made to the Foyer Père Fiset or the Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund. Funeral will be celebrated a later date.

  • Marie Dora Delaney-Aucoin

    Marie Dora Delaney-Aucoin

    March 27, 1936 – March 4, 2023

    Age 86 –  It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Marie Dora (LeBlanc) Delaney-Aucoin at the Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Chéticamp, NS. She is survived by her children, Johanne (Jean-Gilles Chiasson) Delaney, Gordon (Monique) Delaney, Dorena (Thom) Gillis, Donna (Patrick Rogerson) Delaney; siblings, Helene Delaney, Alfred LeBlanc, and Jeanne (Bill) Roode; her dear friend, Daniel Aucoin; and her son-in-law, Kevin Tompkins; as well as seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    She was the eldest child of Adèle and Siméon LeBlanc of Cap-le-Moine. She was pre-deceased by her parents; spouses, Clifford Delaney and Georgie Aucoin; daughter, Marie Tompkins; and siblings, Agnes (Aldéric) LeBlanc-Melanson, and Arthur (Elaine) LeBlanc.

    Dora was an integral part of the community of St Joseph du Moine and Grand Étang. She was an active member of various committees and was very involved in the church and choir.  She provided catering services for various events for many years and, well into her later years, was still selling her homemade rolls at the local Co-op. She very much enjoyed playing 200 and crib.

    The family wishes to thank the staff of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre and the Foyer Père Fiset for their care of Dora during the past year.

    Visitation will take place on Friday, March 10, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, at St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine on Saturday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or the Foyer Père Fiset.

  • Florence Patricia “Patsy” Aucoin

    Florence Patricia “Patsy” Aucoin

    It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Florence Patricia “Patsy” Aucoin on February 25th, 2023 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp at the age of 74.  Patsy was born on December 16th, 1948 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cheticamp to the late Frederick and the late Margaret (Tompkins) Arsenault.

    She left home at an early age to work in Toronto, but a few years later found herself in Halifax pursuing her studies to become a CNA.  Her heart brought her back to Margaree where she met her husband, Leonard.  Patsy and Leonard settled “au lac” where they raised their 2 children, Leonora and Terry.  Patsy worked at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre up until her retirement in 2006, as a medical records tech.

    Patsy and Leonard were happily married for 50 years.  They enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time at “Shantytown”, their paradise on the Margaree River.  Patsy’s door was always open, and you were sure to find a hot pot of tea on the stove.  She was an active member of the community and volunteered countless hours to numerous committees and fundraisers.  She had many hobbies which included gardening, knitting, painting and of course, quilting.  Most importantly, Patsy was very proud of her family and loved spending quality time with her three granddaughters, Anabelle, Samantha, and Hanna.

    Patsy is survived by her loving husband, Leonard; two children, Leonora Aucoin-Satri (Ravi) and Terry Aucoin (Nicole); three granddaughters, Anabelle, Samantha, and Hanna; siblings, Claire LeBlanc (Simon), Rosie McCloskey (Vernon) and Earl Arsenault (Michelle).  She will be remembered and missed by many other family members.  Patsy is predeceased by her brother, Michael Arsenault (Kay).  The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp for their care and compassion.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3rd from 7 to 9pm at the Cheticamp Funeral Home.  Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 4th at 10:30 am in Église St. Joseph, St. Joseph du Moine with Fr.   • Shirley Joyce Poirier

    Shirley Joyce Poirier

    Age 77 –  of Cheticamp, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Shirley was a daughter to the late David Miles and the late Jenny Catherine (Timmons) Hinkley.

    Shirley loved to shop and was always well dressed, with the perfect pair of shoes to match the outfit. She was known for her baking, especially her fudge. She could tell a story like no other without forgetting any details. She loved playing cards with her friends whom she loved dearly. Shirley and her husband Pierre, back in the 70’s, were the ones to open the popular Lick-a-Chick in Cheticamp, now known as Mr. Chicken.

    Shirley is survived by her son, Joey (Aline) Desveaux; daughters, Cindy (Fidèle) LaPierre, and Jeannie (Dwayne) Muise; brother Gregory (Marjorie) Hinkley; grandchildren, Brittany (Brad), Marco (Ashley), Michel, Logan, and Molly; great grandchildren, Braelyn, and Brydan.

    Shirley was predeceased by her first husband Pierre Desveaux, and her second husband, André Poirier; brother, Willard Hinkley; sister, Edwina (infancy); grand daughter, Hope Gayle LaPierre.

    There will be no visitation. A funeral service (for family only) will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Cheticamp Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Rioux officiating. Burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp.

    Joseph A. Aucoin

    Age 96, of Cheticamp passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2023 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Joseph was a son to the late Amédée and the late Anne “Nanoune” (Doucet) Aucoin.

    Joseph was a member of the Senior Citizen’s Club of Cheticamp and was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br# 32, Cheticamp. He was a fisherman most of his life. His passion was dancing…all kinds of dances, especially waltzing. He was a great square set caller. He also loved fiddle music, his favorite being Mike Hall. He enjoyed having his morning coffee with the boys at the senior’s hall. His last wish came true this past week when he passed his driver’s license at the age of 96.

    Joseph is survived by his sons, Real (Dauphine) Aucoin, and Andre (Anita) Aucoin; daughter, Jeannine (Semi) Larade; daughter in law, Sharon Aucoin; sister, Marie Anne (late Johnny) Maillet; grandchildren, Robert, Mark (Kathrine), Dale (Gisele), Cindy (Carl), Jennifer (Myles), Carol (Emile), Matthew, Shauna (Tyler), and Byron (Jillian); great grandchildren, Zackary, Allison, Ava, Katelyn, Nathan, Grayson, Caleb, Chloe, Breanna (Gordon), Paige, Connor, Ainsley, Ellie, and Giana; great-great granddaughter, Hazel.

    Besides his wife, Sadie Mae (Bourgeois) Aucoin, he was predeceased by his son, Roger Aucoin; brothers, Leo and Johnny; sisters, Maggie Muise, Louise Deveau, Yvonne Bourgeois, and Adele Aucoin.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, February 17, 2023 from 1 to 2 PM at Cheticamp Funeral Home followed by funeral service at 2 PM at the funeral home with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp.

    Donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Hospital Charitable Foundation.

  • Edward Joseph “Eddie Joe” Aucoin

    Edward Joseph “Eddie Joe” Aucoin

    Age 88, of Chéticamp, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp. He was a son to the late Joseph and the late Marie Emma (LeBlanc) Aucoin.

    Eddie Joe was a loving husband and father.  Born and raised in Chéticamp, he left as a young man to enlist in the Canadian Armed Forces. During his time in the military, he also served in the US Army (early 1960’s.) Eddie Joe’s time in the US Army saw him serve a tour of duty in Vietnam and stand as part of the honour guard for JFK’s 1963 funeral. Also in 1963, Eddie Joe and Therese were married in Chéticamp.

    After several years living in the USA, they returned to Chéticamp, in 1973, with their daughter Paula (born 1971).  Several years of working odd jobs led to him starting his own flooring company.  Eddie Joe’s brother, Laurent Edmond, worked alongside him until he sold the company and retired.

    During his retirement years Eddie Joe liked to stay busy with gardening, regular golfing, guitar playing; and was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and family.  Eddie Joe was always an active volunteer with the local branch (#32) of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was extremely interested in the activities and projects that both his daughter and son-in-law, Kevin, were involved with or undertaking.Most of all, Eddie Joe will be remembered for his always friendly demeanour, greeting everyone with a warm smile. He was a well loved, highly respected, modest man; who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

    Eddie Joe is survived by his wife, Therese Irene Aucoin; daughter, Paula Aucoin-Camus (Kevin); brother, Laurent Edmond Aucoin.

    Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Davy Aucoin, Yvon Aucoin, Gordon Aucoin, and Georgie Aucoin; sisters, Marie Julie Cooper, and Carmella Aucoin.

    A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 17, 2023 at 10:30 AM in l’Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.

    Memorial donations may be made to the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada.

  • Charlie Poirier

    Charlie Poirier

    Age 83, Cheticamp passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at home. He was a son to the late Eddie John and the late Annie (Poirier) Poirier.

    Charlie was a man of few words. He preferred to express his love through actions. One example was seen in the devotion and care he showed to his wife, Pauline, during their 57 years of marriage. When Charlie wasn’t with Pauline and his family, he was happiest when fishing with his great friends.

    Charlie is survived by his son, Robert Leo (Michelle) Poirier; brothers, Roger (Priscille) Poirier, Willie Joe (Dorella) Poirier, Albert (Doris) Poirier, Roland Poirier; sister, Jeannine Poirier. He was predeceased by his wife Pauline Poirier.

    A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 10:30 am in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp. Everyone is welcome to attend.
