  • Joseph Linus Deveau

    Joseph Linus Deveau

    Age 83 of Cheticamp, passed away peacefully on December 15th, 2020 at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp, after a two year battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Joe and the late Cecile (Doucet) Deveau.

    Linus served for the Canadian Armed Forces for 6 years in the Anti-Aircraft Division. He was in construction in Ontario and later as a pipefitter with the Boilermakers Union Local 73 after moving back to Cheticamp. He was best known as the owner/ Operator, with his wife Thelma, of the Mr. Chicken from 1980 until his retirement in 2001. He was also an integral part of the Harbour Restaurant & Baywind Suites with his son Dave for 17 years. He enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, and hunting in his middle years and followed baseball religiously. His true passion was music. He played guitar and sang on the radio and with live bands in the late 50`s and early 60’s in Toronto. He made many friends in bluegrass circles over the years travelling to festivals and concerts all over Atlantic Canada and the Eastern U.S., travelling with his wife in their RV. A loving brother, husband, father, and grandfather who always ensured the welfare for his family.

    Linus is survived by his wife Thelma (Leblanc); sons Mark and Dave (Jennifer); grandchildren, Lauren and Ethan; sister, Jeanne; brothers, Arthur, Robert, Eugene, and Leonard. Linus was predeceased by sisters, Agnes, Yvonne & Marie Catherine; brothers, Gaston, Willie, Daniel, Alfred and Gerard. We would like to thank the Doctors and nurses for palliative caregiving at Sacred Heart Community Health Centre. Due to Covid 19, service for family and friends is by invitation only on Monday, December 21st, 2020, at 10:30 am at the Cheticamp Funeral Home. Burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cheticamp. Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

  • Marina Camus

    Marina Camus

    Age 69, Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Chéticamp, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home. Marina was the daughter of the late Joseph and the late Marguerite(Maggie) (Larade) Camus.

    Marina loved to listen to music, and this was her favorite activity at the Foyer, along with going on bus rides with her brother Patrice. We would like to thank the staff of the Foyer Père Fiset for the care they gave Marina.

    Marina is survived by brothers, Patrice Camus and Napoleon Camus. She was predeceased by sisters, Germaine Cormier, Bella Camus, and Bernice Chiasson.

    Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 26, 2020, at 10:30 am in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Chéticamp, with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to Foyer Père Fiset or a charity of one’s choice.

    Marie Catherine Black

    Age 83, Foyer Père Fiset, Chéticamp, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp.

    Catherine was a daughter of the late Willie and the late Yvonne (Camus) Muise.

    She was a Fish Plant worker and loved to hook rugs. In 2018, Catherine moved to Highland Manor in Neil’s Harbour, and in 2019 was transferred to the Foyer Père Fiset, Chéticamp.

    Catherine is survived by a son Michael Jr.; and daughter, Bonnie (late Alphonse) Boudreau; special friends, Bertha Mae and Harvey Camus, and Darrell Deveau. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Black; twin daughters, Debbie and Kelly (in infancy); brother, Vince.

    Special thanks to Dr. Paul Sonier and staff of the Foyer Père Fiset and most recently the staff of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, for their unending devotion and care.

    Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held in Jehovah’s Witness Cemetery, at a later date. Donations may be made to Foyer Père Fiset, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre.

    Tony Harris

    Age 47, Chéticamp, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. Tony was a son of Charlie Joe and Lucie Adèle (Deveau) Harris.

    It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to Tony after a short, but tough battle with lung cancer, after having been cancer free for over 12 years. Tony was born in Chéticamp where he lived all his life and where he met the love of his life with whom he spent the rest of his life with. He and his wife were married on October 10, 2020. Even knowing what laid ahead, he chose to live life to the fullest. Tony was most comfortable in the woods and in the mountains which surrounded his family homestead. One of his favorite things to do was to spend time with his favorite dogs, Levis and Bella. His pets (cats and dogs), were his babies. As he didn’t have children of his own, he greatly loved his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Tony had great love for his family and friends.

    Beloved son, husband, brother, cousin, uncle and friend to many, he will be forever loved and missed….but never forgotten. ‘til we meet again Tony….xox

    Besides his parents, Tony is survived by his wife Candice (Glazer) Harris; brothers, Ricky Harris, and Brian (Mary Lee) Harris; sisters, Debbie (Clyde Elliott) Harris, and Ida Deveau.

    Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, from 7-9pm at the Chéticamp Funeral Home. Masks and social distancing are required. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at the Chéticamp Funeral Home (family and invited guests only). Burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Chéticamp. All are welcome to attend the graveside prayers at 11am.

    Donations may be made to Cancer Patient Center, Sydney, Cape Breton Cancer Patient Fund, or charity of one’s choice.

    Marie Sophique Roach

    Age 97, Chéticamp, passed away peacefully with her daughter, Marie Jeanne by her side, on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Chéticamp. Marie Sophique was a daughter of the late Joseph Placide and the late Judique (Muise) Larade.

    Married at a young age, Marie Sophique lost her young son at the age of 21 months and then 3 months later, her young husband, Pierre. She was 4 weeks pregnant with her daughter, Marie Jeanne. Marie Sophique moved back home with her parents and after losing her Mom who died at 46 years of age, she took care of her younger siblings. She stayed with them until they were old enough to be on their own. Marie Sophique worked at Sacred Heart Hospital as a kitchen helper for 17 years. She then married her second husband, Josie Roach.

    Marie Sophique loved playing La Dame de Pique with her daughter, almost every day, even in the past years with her eyesight getting worse. She loved getting visitors. She was always happy to see anyone and would recognize them by their voices. To her siblings, she was like a mother, and they considered her daughter Marie Jeanne as much a sister as their niece. She is now resting in peace with her loved ones, no walker, no pain, no more darkness, as she is able to see everyone (as she would often say…it is so dark in here. Toi, la plus belle femme au monde, nous t’aimons tante Marie Sophique.

    Marie Sophique is survived by her daughter, Marie Jeanne Doucet (Delaney); grandchildren, Debbie Logher (Paul) and Wayne Doucet (Julie), both of London, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Brent and Mark Doucet, and Erica Logher, all of London, Ont.; brothers, Leo Larade (Lucienne), Halifax and Marcel Larade (Sylvia), Chéticamp; sisters, Marie Cecile Malone, Chéticamp, Marie Stella Michaud (Yvon), Chéticamp, and Marie Thérese Creaser (Walter), Halifax; sisters-in-law, Clara Larade, Halifax, Marie Gemma Larade, Chéticamp, and Cecile Corkum Larade, Pictou.

    Marie Sophique was predeceased by first husband, Pierre S. Larade, and second husband, Josie Roach; son, Simon Joe Larade; sons-in-law, Raymond Doucet and Roger Delaney; brothers, Pierre Théodore Larade, Alphonse Larade, Patsy Larade, Cyril Larade and André Larade; sisters, Margaret Ann LeFort and Beatrice Peters; brothers-in-law, Willie LeFort, George Peters, and Sid Malone; sister-in-law, Germaine Doucet.

    The family would like to thank the staff of the Foyer Père Fiset, Doctors, and Gerald LeBlanc for his visits, stories, and prayers.

    Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held in Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp, on Friday, November 13, 2020, at 10:30 AM (invited guests only), with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Masks are required. Burial in parish cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

  • Barry Chiasson

    Barry Chiasson

    Age 69, Cheticamp passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2020, in the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Barry was the son of the late Dr. Russell and the late Yvonne (Cormier) Chiasson.

    Barry worked as a truck driver for over forty years, his career giving him the opportunity to travel all across Canada and the United States. Cars and trucks were a major passion in his life, as he found great joy in driving and taking care of his vehicles. He loved bluegrass and fiddle music. Even though his job took him away from home for periods of time, he was a loving husband and father, caring deeply for his wife and two daughters.

    Barry is survived by his wife Muriel (Larade) Chiasson; daughters, Majella, Cheticamp, and Stéphanie (Ottawa); sister, Patricia (Loubie) Roach; brothers-in-law, Gerard (Marie) Larade, Joseph Larade, Fernand (Paulette) Larade, Robert Doucet, Clarence LeLièvre; sister-in-law, Sylvie AuCoin; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was predeceased by sisters-in-law, Marie Claire Doucet and Magella LeLièvre; brother-in-law, Rheal AuCoin.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to Barry’s healthcare team, Dr. Amélie Maillet and the rest of the staff at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, as well as the palliative care team of Dr. Alexander Ritter and nurse Moira Chiasson, who all took such good care of Barry. We are eternally grateful to all of them.

    Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held in St. Peter’s Cemetery on Saturday, November 14, 2020, (for family only) with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.   • Marie Sophie Deveau

    Marie Sophie Deveau

    Age 77, Foyer Père Fiset, Cheticamp, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2020 in the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. She was a daughter of the late Lubin and the late Mathilda (Ramard) LeBlanc.

    Formerly of St. Joseph du Moine, she was a resident of the Foyer Père Fiset since 2004. She was known for working countless hours on her knitting, rug hookings and homemade buns (des p’tit pains). She made it a point of taking care of her family and was so proud of her grandkids.

    Marie Sophie is survived by sons, Cyril (Tammy) Deveau, Real (Celeste) Deveau, Michel (Diane) Deveau, and Joel (Lynn) Deveau; daughter, Paulette (Christopher) Deveau; brothers, Lionel LeBlanc, Michel LeBlanc, and Linus LeBlanc; sisters, Marie Marguerite LeBlanc and Bernice MacCallum; grandchildren, Justin, Brittany (Evan), Kaylee (Hannah), Shelby, Carson, Pierre, and Matthieu.

    Marie Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Pierre Deveau; and brother Joseph Fidel LeBlanc.

    Visitation at the Cheticamp Funeral Home on Thursday, October 29, 2020, with visiting hours from 7-9 PM. Masks and social distancing are required. A funeral mass will be celebrated (for family and invited guests) on Friday, October 30, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Église St. Joseph, St. Joseph du Moine with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

    Judith Scott

    Age 75, Chéticamp /Halifax, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 8, 2020 with her family at her bedside. Born in Chéticamp on April 29, 1945, she was the beloved daughter of the late Thaddéo and the late Marie (Chiasson) Chiasson, Petit Étang. Judy was a member of Paroisse Saint-Pierre, Chéticamp, and St. Agnes Parish, Halifax.

    Judy was a woman of deep faith.  She courageously faced her terminal lung cancer diagnosis with a sense of peace and contentment knowing she would one day be reunited with her husband, Scotty.  Having spent most of her adult life in Halifax and Mill Village, Judy returned to Chéticamp in July to spend her final months surrounded by family and friends.  It was a beautiful summer filled with love, laughter, good food, books, puzzles, and lots of music (including her favorite, Hal Bruce).  So many wonderful memories were made at her little “dollhouse cottage” on the Chéticamp river.

    Left to mourn Judy’s passing are her sons, Dr. Michel (Moira) Chiasson, Chéticamp; and Duncan (Romy) Butler, Lower Sackville; and her cherished grandchildren Catherine, Allan, and Molly Chiasson; Max and Ben Butler. She will also be remembered fondly by her siblings, Laurette (Georgie) Larade, Éthel MacKinnon (André Poirier), Marie-Colombe (Camille) Robichaud, Cyril Chiasson, Nettie Chiasson (Donnie Poirier), Germaine (Germain) Bourgeois, Martine (Pierre-Joseph) Camus, Stella Chiasson (Nancy Eisenhauer), Gaston (Lorraine) Chiasson; goddaughter Lucille Deveaux; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, James Scott; three brothers in infancy; sister, Micheline; brother, Charlie.

    As per Judy’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at 2 pm in Église Saint-Pierre, Chéticamp, with Rev. Pierre Antoine St-Cyr officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Due to covid-19 contact tracing requirements, guests wishing to attend are asked to please contact Judy’s brother, Gaston Chiasson, to register.  A mass in celebration of Judy’s life will also be celebrated on Friday, October 23, 2020 at 10 am in St. Agnes Parish, Halifax. In accordance with covid-19 requirements, those who wish to attend the mass at St. Agnes are asked to please phone Tracy at the St. Agnes Parish Office in order to register.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Judy’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Society, North Inverness County (PO Box 129, Chéticamp, NS B0E 1H0 or e-transfer [email protected]).

    Amelia Elizabeth Chiasson

    Age 105, Foyer Père Fiset, Chéticamp, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2020 in the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Chéticamp. She was a daughter to the late Leon and the late Hélène (Cormier) Chiasson.

    Amelia was a stay at home Mom who always had a full cookie jar. She was very involved in her community. An avid card player, she never turned down an opportunity for a good game.

    Special thank you goes out to the staff of Foyer Père Fiset and Sacred Heart Community Health Centre for the care and compassion rendered to our mom over the years and these past few days.

    Amelia is survived by her sons, Napoleon (Marie Hélène), Chéticamp, Eric (Karen), Alabama, Tommy (Yvette), Chéticamp, and Roger (Mary Lou), Chéticamp; grandchildren, Jacques Chiasson, Chéticamp, Joel (Celeste) Chiasson, Sydney, Jocelyne (Kirk) MacDougall, Hammonds Plains, Brian Chiasson, Ottawa, Kevin Chiasson, Chéticamp, Paul Chiasson, Chéticamp, Réjean Chiasson, Chéticamp, and Ronelle Chiasson, Port Hood; great grandchildren, Ian Chiasson, Chéticamp, Eli Chiasson, Sydney, and Noé Chiasson, Sydney; sister-in-law, Kay Deveau, Oxford, N.S.     Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 7-9 P.M. in Chéticamp Funeral Home, with an open wake. Due to COVID 19, masks are mandatory. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 3, 2020, (family only) at 10:30 A.M. in Église St. Pierre, Chéticamp, with Father Pierre Antoine St. Cyr officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

    Henrietta (Harriet) Marie AuCoin

    With deep sadness the family announces that Henrietta (Harriet) Marie AuCoin (86), Foyer Père Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp, formerly of Belle Cote, Inverness County, passed away peacefully on 17 August 2020. Born on 26 December, 1933 in Margaree Harbour, and raised in Terre Noire, she was the daughter of the late George and Marie (Leblanc) AuCoin.  She was a long serving member of St Michael’s Church, East Margaree, and most recently of L’Église St Pierre, Cheticamp. She is survived by her six children – Allan (Elizabeth Dean), Gibsons BC; Richard (Denise Murrin), Lethbridge AB; Gordon (Kim Sutton), Ottawa ON; Priscilla (John Martin), Stoney Creek ON; Maurice (Chantal Pitre) Westmount QC; and Harold (Lynn Chiasson) Timberlea NS; sixteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren; sisters Honora (Nora) Considine, Dartmouth, NS; Sister Anne, Antigonish, NS; and brothers Arthur, East Margaree, NS; Wilfred, Edmonton AB, and Theodore, St Joseph de Moine, NS.

    She was predeceased by her soul mate and most beloved husband of 44 years Joseph AuCoin (1999); brothers George, John, and Jerome (Jerry); and son-in-law John Martin.

    Well known for her very social and engaging personality, Harriet loved hosting visitors. The tea pot was always on, and at meal time there was always room for more at the table. She was gifted with an amazing ability to make everyone feel at ease and at home. A deeply devoted wife and nurturing mother, above all else, Harriet dearly loved her family, and always placed their needs above her own. Her infectious laugh, her quick wit, and generous heart will be missed dearly by all who were blessed to have known her.

    The family would like to extend their sincerest heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Foyer Père Fiset and the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre for their unwavering care, kindness, and compassion. During these challenging times of COVID-19 when we could not be with her in person, your communication, support, and companionship were well above and beyond what could be expected.

    Cremation has taken place, with burial in St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held after COVID-19 travel and gathering restrictions are lifted.
